OVERVIEW
The TME-122 Spitting Fish is a nuclear combat submarine designed to completely dominate older submersibles like the Neptune-class diesel submarine. Utilizing the most advanced engine, weapons, and armor technology, it succeeds quite well.
CAPABILITIES
The Spitting Fish is powered by a 270-class double-extra light fusion engine which, even though it is only about one tenth of the Spitting Fish's mass, takes up nearly one-fifth of the Spitting Fish's hull. However, the impact of this is minimized through an innovative "underwater jet engine" design that lays along the bottom and rear of the hull. Water is drawn in through twin intakes in the bow and, when used to cool the engine, is turned to steam which is then ejected out of a force-vectoring exhaust in the aft, propelling the Spitting Fish. While causing a great deal of cavitation and sonar-detectable noise, it keeps the engine very cool even at maximum output. The Spitting Fish also has the normal complement of heat sinks, allowing it to dissipate heat normally without moving. If silence is truly needed, then backup propellers within the exhaust channel can move the Spitting Fish extremely quietly although it cannot exceed its cruising speed in this manner.
The TME-122 is well armed for both underwater and surface combat. A long-range torpedo twenty-rack in a ventral turret provides devastating ranged firepower to all directions against other naval vessels. Twin short-range torpedo six-racks in side sponson can quickly obliterate any naval target that gets close enough. A rapid-fire 10-class autocannon and a medium-range missile twenty-rack on a dorsal bow turret give the Spitting Fish its devastating surface firepower. Five medium lasers placed defensively act as superb medium-range defense on the surface and short-range defense underwater.
The TME-122 is armored with slightly more than eleven tons of ferro-fibrous armor. While this gives it durability overall greater to the Neptune-class, its additional turrets makes it somewhat thinner skinned. However, the additional weapons allowed by these turrets makes the Spitting Fish as well as the Spitting Fish's ability to stay underwater indefinitely far superior to the Neptune.
DEPLOYMENT
The TME-122 is slowly supporting and supplanting the Neptune-class in underwater command-control base defenses.
VARIANTS
The TME-122-A replaces the extra-extralight engine for a more common extralight and replaces the rapid fire autocannon and its ammunition with a medium rotary autocannon and sixty bursts of ammunition for it.
