OVERVIEW
The TME-150 Mortus series was a nearly successful attempt to make the ultimate medium BattleMech. The idea came upon a TME engineer in 3001 (local date) while modifying a WVR-6R Wolverine by dropping the light autocannon in favor of a particle projector cannon and additional heat sinks. He came to the conclusion that even old particle projector cannons were more effective than light autocannon, especially seeing how medium 'Mechs of the 3025 era already had additional heat sinks. Being a BLR-1G BattleMaster devotee, he also saw that rather than designing for safe "alpha-strike" capability by giving a 'Mech a limited amount of weapons that could all be fired at once with relative safety, it was better to design "variable engagement range" capability by giving the 'Mech a varied arsenal that would maximize damage at various ranges but aren't designed to be fired together. Using the BLR-1G as an example, the particle projection cannon can safely damage enemies from a distance with no heat problem. Once the enemy comes into the effective range of the medium lasers and the short-range missile rack, the particle cannon is forgotten while the more effective weapons are fired, still with no heat problem.
CAPABILITIES
The Mortus was designed to have average maneuverability, superior armor, and superior firepower. Although massing five tons less than the Wolverine, it had the same amount of armor, moved just as well, and had a superior arsenal. A trustworthy particle projection cannon in a disengagable mount acted as the ranged firepower (with the same range, double the damage potential, and none of the ammunition restrictions of the Wolverine's Whirlwind autocannon) while four medium lasers surpassed the Wolverine's meager short-ranged missiles and single medium laser. Originally sold in the Inner Sphere in 3001, the TME-150 Mortus was the first TME design to actually see use in the BattleTech S/TS. It was a success through and through.
DEPLOYMENT
The TME-15, although not the first TME 'Mech design in the Inner Sphere (the TME-001 Killemall was first, introduced in 3000), was the best known soon after its 3052 release. Many buyers of the TME-15 return to request other TME Battlemechs, and commanders familiar with TME vehicles also ask about our Battlemechs. Eve though the TME uses proven (i.e. old) technology for the 3060s, it is still quite an item and sales have continued to be brisk.
VARIANTS
As technology progressed, so did the Mortus. Treated like a miniature BattleMaster, the Mortus was in the front line for upgrades to superior technology. The TME-150-A Mortus Advanced, which came out in 3049, was a champion of modern design. An extra-light engine and double heat sinks gave it the tonnage allowance and heat dissipation required to mount an additional ton of armor, upgrade the particle projector cannon to an extended-range version, and double the lasers. Whatever could make it past the extended-range particle projector cannon was quickly tamed by the power of eight medium lasers. The Mortus Advanced fought well against the Clans, where it found a similar adversary.
After several TME-150 Mortus 'Mechs were captured by Wolf's Dragoons and their plans transmitted to the Clans, TME engineers came up with the TME-150-B Mortus IIC, a powerful second-line 'Mech that utilized superior Clan technology. It kept its maximized armor but, in addition to its extra-light engine, it used endo steel internal structure to save additional tonnage. A Clan extended-range particle cannon, four medium pulse lasers, two extended-range medium lasers, and two extended-range small lasers graced its powerful frame. Three additional double heat sinks were added to dissipate the increased heat load.
As it stands now, both the TME-150-A and the TME-150-B have Omni versions (identical to the originals but without integral weapons). All of the Mortus designs are powerful fighters that are prized by their MechWarriors and their commanders.
