OVERVIEW

The TME-155 Valiant is a giant assault 'Mech patterned after the withering array of firepower mounted on the Behemoth heavy tank.  Each arm carries a disengagable rifle-like 10-class autocannon, and missle turrets consisting of ten long-range tubes and six short-range tubes are mounted high above each shoulder.   Embedded within each armored shoulderplate are two medium lasers, with a fifth medium laser just under the cockpit.  Hardpoints for twin double-machine gun emplacements were included in the forward torso but not included in the original design due to space limitations.

The Valiant has about four-fifths of the armor of the Atlas and is actually slower, but has superior ranged firepower and near-parity if not superior short-ranged firepower.  Twenty heat sinks work hard but successfully to dissipate the heat caused by this mammoth war machine.

DEPLOYMENT

The TME-155 Valiant is a popular fire-support command mount, but is often too slow for the mobile battles common to today.  Many commanders feel that the acronym CSU (part of TME's "Continental Siege Unit" ad campaign) is not much of an overstatement.  A common field modification replaces the 10-class autocannon with dual particle projection cannon and a more powerful engine (as well as additional heat sinks if there was still mass left).  An upgrade to modern technology is expected utilizing extralight engines, better armor, double heat sinks, and even the dreaded rotary autocannon!

DESIGNER'S NOTE:    Fans of Keith Laumer's "Retief" series of books may recognize both the CSU acronym and the "Bolo model WV/1" designation for what they truly are (of course, fans of Laumer's "Bolo" series will certainly recognize the designation).  In "Cultural Exchange," Retief:  Envoy to New Worlds (Copyright Keith Laumer, 1963; printed Baen Books, 1987), the Bolo model WV is "'what is known as a Continental Siege Unit... with a half-megaton/second firepower,'" with the modification (M-1) of a blade "'for demolition work'" (page 65).  The Behemoth tank is as close as 3026 Battletech will ever get to a CSU; the Valiant is merely a bipedal version (Bolo model WV/2?) for all-terrain capability.
