The Citadel of Treve
From the dawn of time, the Voltai rose high above the flat lands. Holding within
it a hidden
citadel, a fortress that was unknown to all but those whose birth right
had allowed them to become
apart of a city feared by many. Whose warriors
were some of the fiercest men upon all of Gor.
A city that was inaccessible,
except by tarn, those fierce beasts that thunder through the skies,
like a bolt let
loose from a well aimed bow. Treve, a savage city
upon an equally savage world.
"Indeed, there was little known even of the city of Treve. It lay somewhere among the lofty, vast
terrains of the rugged Voltai, perhaps as much a fortress, a lair, of outlaw tarnsmen as a city.
It was said to be accessible only on tarnback. No woman, it was said, could be brought to
the city, save as a hooded, stripped slave girl, bound across the saddle of a tarn. Indeed,
even merchants and ambassadors were permitted to approach the city only under conduct,
and then only when hooded and in bonds, as though none not of Treve might approach her
save as slaves or captive supplicants. The location of the city, it was said, was known only
to her own. Even girls brought to Treve as slaves, obedient within her harsh walls,
looking up, seeing her rushing, swift skies, did not know wherein lay the city in which
they served. And even should they be dispatched to the walls, perhaps upon some
servile errand, they could see, for looming, remote pasangs about them, only the wild,
bleak crags of the scarlet Voltai, and the sickening drop below them, the sheer fall from
the walls and the cliffs below to the valley, pasangs beneath. They would know only that
they were slaves in this place but would not know where this place in which they were
slaves might be. It is said no woman had ever escaped Treve." Captive of Gor,

The City of Treve is a place of fierce independence, a
citadel that stands arrogant, unconquered, and impregnable. Set high in the Voltai Mountains, nestled in
its peaks, it is savage and remote,
possessing a brutal and natural beauty that is accessible only by tarnback.
A mish-mash of
structures, almost every building has its own tarn tower. Treve is a city that is constantly at war, for it survives through raiding and pillaging, taking from all those which it considers weak and fearing the reprisals of none. It creates little and grows less, the land not being suited for either endeavor. Instead, the whole of the city is a great staging point, a kind of permanent war camp, always armed, always vigilant, always active. In this life of constant war, its greatest asset is its tarnsmen, who are the best in the world, most being born to the saddle. They possess unnatural ability in flight, many other city's saying that the tarn and tarnsman of Treve are one in the same. All of its people have a strong love of freedom, and an intense loyalty to their home. Even slaves are said to be fiercely proud of their foster city, speaking the name of Treve with pride. These feelings stem from the knowledge that it is them alone, against the world. All stand against them, yet they carry the war to the enemy. Outnumbered a hundred to one, yet they hold their own and survive. Like a cornered animal, they fight to the end. Being at war with most of the world has caused those of Treve to strive to be the best at all they do, and has created a strong bond of camaraderie that surpasses the sword and collar. To survive, those of Treve have to be highly skilled, seeking to succeed in all they do, and striving to constantly hone and improve their abilities. This need for talent has fostered a strong respect for ability of every kind. The finesse of a warrior's sword arm, the perfection of a slave's service, the creation of the artist's vision, the words of a scribe, each is praised and given honor for the men of Treve have learned to take nothing for granted, for the contributions of the mass produces the greatness of the whole. But of all, it is Honor that is held in the highest regard, for all of the above is nothing without that one piece that bonds it all. Called thieves and brigands by the rest of the world, the men of Treve demand a high standard of Honor from all of their city, breaking it for none. Even the lowest among them is said to hold his head with pride, for unlike those of other cities, he is of Treve. [Excerpt from the Gorean Encyclopedia] |
"Treve is a bandit city, high among the crags of the larl-prowled Voltai. Most men do not
even know its location. Once the tarnsmen of Treve had withstood the tarn cavalries
of even Ar. In Treve they do not grow their own food but, in the fall, raid the harvests of
others. They live by rapine and plunder. The men of Treve are said to be among the
proudest and most ruthless on Gor. They are most fond of danger and free women,
whom
they bind and steal from civilized cities to carry to their mountain lair as slave girls.
It is said the city can be reached only on tarnback." Raiders of Gor, page 272
