No Impermenance
7-19-2002

"Everything is impermenant," yet there is no need to hurry things on their way out of existence- to give an example: the Buddhist Sumi-e water paintings- yet even these, when witnessed, can change the course of one's life by creating a moment's delay that can either bring luck, or cause trouble. A thing of beauty should be appreciated and treasured as long as possible, shared with as many who can see or experience it, and as a result grow, affected by their experience. As a result, the thing of beauty will live on, in some subtle or great way, and will never completely pass from the world. Not everything is impermenant, just transient. anything can change, or even be forgotten, but its effect will live and be passed on, a monument of fluidity. If one were to extrapolate this situation to the end of humanity, for the sake of arguement, when everything we have created becomes dirt, who is to say that a piece of dirt that once was a painting, or some crumbled stone, that was a monument, might house a seed that will one day grow, but might not otherwise have lived had it not been for a work of art? Surely then, if the tree could think, it would appreciate this art which has sustained it, though in a different way than it did us. A man might see a painting of wonderful clouds, and as a result go outside to lay in a field and watch clouds. In the field, at some barely perceptable level, he affects the world by his action or inaction. Though we might not think of it at times, everything affects something else, and is imperceptably connected across time and existence. Even if this is never read, my line of thinking has still been changed, which will in turn affect something else, and thus my actions affected by some ancient buddhist, who by his very existence, proved himself wrong.

Advice for Women

I've seen it happen so many times... you'll find a jerk, stay with him, maybe even try to change him, and he'll do something awful to hurt you, and you'll wind up stuck, alone or with another jerk... and before you know it, you're getting married and having kids, then the jerk hurts you and you're divorced or unhappy for the rest of your life, and you're all alone trying to raise a kid... and then maybe you either find another jerk who resents the kid, or you manage to find a nice guy who has to be in pain because he's just the leftovers that you never chose in the first place... do humanity a favor and just go for the nice guy to begin with... everyone will be so much happier and the world will be a better place.
