It's hard to go trekking in a space station the size of a major city.
Add a commander who's not sure he wants to be there. Benjamin Sisko is just such a man. A recent widower, with an adolescent son to raise,he's questioning whether he should remain in Starfleet at all...and now this new assignment.
The people of Bajor, a peaceful aggrarian lot, have been enslaved by the Cardassians for years. It was the warlike Cardassians who built the station they called Terek Nor. After their departure from the area The Federation stepped in to help the Bajorans rebuild.
Sisko is aided by Major Kira Nerys, Bajoran Liaison Officer who has the best interests of the Planet at heart, his Head of Security, Odo, a shapeshifter who can assume any form at will, and Science Officer, Lt Commander Jadzia Dax, the Trill Symbiont.
Chief Medical Officer, Dr Julian Bashir, a brilliant young man who, unknown to anyone else aboard, is a product of illegal genetics. Julian becomes fast friends with Chief of Operations Miles Obrien who, with his wife, Keiko, has transferred from the USS Enterprise.
And one more late arrival from The Enterprise rounds out the crew; odd fellow, strange name.....
