Their quarry is the elusive Chakotay, also a former Star Fleet Officer, who joined the Maquis for political reasons.
Janeways head of security, Tuvok the Vulcan, has infiltrated the Maquis for intelligence purposes but has had no recent contact with Star Fleet.
Janeway hopes Paris spent enough time with the renegades to make himself useful. They begin their search among the plasma storms of the Badlands where the Maquis ship is known to have disappeared.
Suddenly Voyager is scanned by a tetryon beam of unknown origin and a huge displacement wave is detected heading their way.
Unable to use warp drive in the plasma storm they brace for impact as the wave hits.
When the emergency passes, and a calm settles, it is discovered that several key personnel have been killed including the First Officer the Chief Engineer and Chief Medical Officer.
