Three days later they awaken on board Voyager. Everyone is present and accounted for except Harry Kim. Chakotay says one of his crew members is missing as well.
A temporary alliance is formed to search for the missing and they return to the array to confront the entity there.
He ignores their demands dismssing them as a minor bi-pedal species. "You don't have what I need. Go away."
When asked if he could return them home he will only say that it would be complicated and he doesn't have time.
Tuvok explains that the energy bursts are directed at the fifth planet in the local system. It appears to be m-class except for a total lack of water.
The 2 ships set out to investigate. Along the way they pick up an alien named Neelix who promises to help them in their search in exchange for water.
He is familiar with the Ocampa who live underground. He believes the missing people may have been sent to them by The Caretaker, which is the name they use for the banjo playing entity.
After much more subterfuge on the part of alien forces and several narrow escapes the 2 missing people are finally reunited with their fellows and at last a crew takes shape.
