Who's up for a little research?
Meet some of the "Big Bads" that Buffy and the gang have had to research...
Season 1, "The
Master will rise and the world will bleed." The Master had tried to open the
Hellmouth and got himself stuck in it instead. Buffy's mission, keep him from
freeing himself and going up to the surface. She was not able to keep him from
getting free, in fact, she died (for the first time) trying, but after Xander
brought her back she was able to defeat the Master and close the Hell
Mouth.
Season 2, "Angellus, the vampire with the
angelic face." After one moment of true happiness in Buffy's arms Angel lost
his soul and became Angellus again. Buffy's mission, to keep him from awakening
Acathla, a demon with the ability to suck the world into hell. Angel's blood is
what will wake Acathla, and Angel's blood is what will close the portal. During
a sword fight with Buffy, Angel is able to awaken the demon and as the portal
opens Willow's spell works. Angel's soul is restored. Buffy kisses him, tells
him to close his eyes, and then drives the sword through him and sends her love
to hell.
Season 3, "No one can stop the ascension -
Mayor's got it wired B. He built this town for demons to feed on and come
graduation day - he's gettin' paid." Faith joins forces with Sunnydale's own
Mayor Wilkins. Buffy's mission, prevent the ascension from happening and try to
keep her friends and family safe from a Slayer gone bad. To keep Buffy
distracted and therefore out of the way of the Mayor's plans, Faith shoots
Angel with a poison arrow. The cure? The blood of a Slayer. Buffy goes after
Faith and believes that she killed her. She allows Angel to drink of her own
blood to cure her love. Angel, seeing a greiving Mayor Wilkin's in the hospital
with his unconscious Faith provides the key the scoobies need to fight the
Mayor. Faith is his weakness. Buffy is able to lore the now ascended demon into
the school where they blow the Mayor and the school to bits... A very final end
to highschool.
Season 4, "I was created to kill - to
extinguish life wherever I find it." Adam a Frankenstein like project created
by the head of the Initiative, Maggie Walsh. A combination of man and demon to
create the perfect soldier. She created a perfect killer. Buffy's mission, to
find a way to destroy Adam before he can complete his plan to create an army of
creatures like him. By joining with her closest friends - Giles, Xander, and
Willow, they are able to create a super Buffy with Slayer strength and fighting
ability, Willow's witchcraft, Giles' intellect and linguistics, and Xander's
heart. Together they are able to defeat Adam and pull out his Uranium power
core.
Season 5, "Glory's not a demon... she's a
god." Looking for the key that will open the dimensions so that she may return
to her own, Glory, the self posessed hell god will stop at nothing to get it.
Buffy's mission, to protect Dawn, a sister created from the mystical energies
of the very key that Glory is looking for - made human by the monks and sent to
the Slayer to protect. Glory's one weakness, she is a god in exile. Banished to
live, and eventually die, pressed into the body of a human male - Ben. Buffy is
able to beat Glory down into her human form, but is unable to kill him. As
Giles explains it, "she's a hero, she's not like us..." and Giles lends a hand
- literally - and suffocates Ben. Unfortunately, one of Glory's followers, Doc,
has cut Dawn, and with her blood the walls between dimensions crumble. Her
blood is what starts it and it will not stop until the blood stops. Dawn must
jump to her death but Buffy won't let her. The monks made Dawn out of Buffy and
Buffy takes her sister's place and dives off the platform to her death thus
resealing the boundries between dimensions.
Season 6, "We're crime
lords." "Pathetic little men who like to play with toys" O.K., so these guys
can't really be considered the "Big Bad" ... Maybe the "Big Nuisance", but they
do open the topic of human evil, something Buffy doesn't usually deal with, and
the inner demons of humans. Buffy's mission, learn to deal with growing up, and
taking responsibilty for your actions.
Season 7, "I am something
that you can't even conceive. The First Evil. Beyond sin, beyond death. I am
the thing the darkness fears. You'll never see me, but I am everywhere. Every
being, every thought, every drop of hate." The First Evil, the thing that
created evil, non-corporeal, and able to take on the form of anyone who has
died, is building an army of ancient vampires, with the help of The Bringers
and a misogynistic preacher named Caleb. Buffy's mission, to thwart The First's
plans and destroy the hellmouth for good.
