- PW's "Edge of Madness": A Report.
WARNING: VERY MINOR SPOILERS.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Someone recently asked if anyone could report on this straight-to-video
film of Peter's and speak to: "How was his Scottish accent?"
Very few people have seen EoM since it *just* became available.
My copy was pre-ordered from Amazon and arrived 2 days ago--so
I thought I'd give ordering details, DVD info, and a wee bit
of my speculation & opinion.
[Note: If you are NOT "A Wingfield Collectionist" . . . then you might want to save your money and get someone to make a tape of it for you. Or not.]
8. Director: Anne Wheeler
9. "Budget": Obviously quite "spartan", but spent their pennies
wisely. <g>
10. Cast & Crew "Feeding": the Storm Restaurant and Maverick
Catering :)
11. Cast & Crew "Temperature & Comfort": Deep freezing
to icy cold. 8-(
12. Crew: Majority were trainees and "dailies" (paid only
when needed).
13. British Dialog Coaching: 2 guys (forgot names)
14. Scottish Dialog Coaching: The MacDonalds (husband &
wife team).
III. CAST:
1. PETER WINGFIELD as the "Reverend McBain" - GOOD Scots accent, tho' sometimes
slips a bit; I think he was channelling Adrian as DMOTCM.
<g> [More on Peter below.]
2. Paul Johansson - as the Sheriff - AWFUL British accent;
still scruffy-looking.
3. Caroline D'Havernas - as Annie Herron; young, pretty; does
well; charming.
4. Corey Sevier - as George Herron, 17, rosy-cheeked, "pretty";
a good job.
5. Brendan Fehr - ("Roswell") - as Simon Herron; handsome;
"one-note" role.
IV. PETER SPECIFICS:
1. He has only 4 scenes and maybe 30-40 lines of dialog total
+SINGING <g>
2. He is not seen until at the 38-minute mark into the film.
3. Wears the most godawful haircut, skinny muttonchops; ugly
clothes...but he still mesmerizes you and is powerful in his
performance.
4. Is humorless/mean-spirited in scenes 1 & 3; barely
noticeable in 2nd scene; is a real surprise in last scene
performing a marriage; preaching; singing with congregation.
<You will want to replay this one ... it's *such* a change
from anything he's ever done...I laughed like a maniac.>
5. No evidence of ol' Death on a Horse, but does "mean man/squinty
eyes."
6. SPECULATIVELY..., I believe Peter did this one for the
money ONLY...and certainly suffered the privations and freezing
cold while making it! [What a guy! What a trooper!! Ya gotta
love him for doing this one.]
7. BOTTOM LINE: BUY IT if you love Peter and his career and
don't care what he's in (eg: 6-foot-tall frog suit)...and
you want ALL of his "oeuvre."
[The Completionist.]
DON'T buy it if you only want him being Methos or looking scrumptious.
[The Selectivist.]
That said, I will definitely enjoy seeing this DVD at least one more time now and will undoubtedly watch it from time to time when I'm going through my entire Peter Collection, ie: everything he's ever done EXCEPT the STILLS of Rocky Horror Show, St Barts Hospital & Medical College Drama Society, Senior Class Follies . . . and I'm *still* working on that. :-D
Cheers!
TCBO2, a Wingfield Completionist
- Asylum membership closed.
I have closed Asylum membership. Anyone who submitted a request to join before today will be processed. New memberships are no longer being considered. This status will remain indefinitely. So far I have decided to keep the announcements list running, but I may only keep it going for another year or so, or I may turn it into an open forum where anyone can post. This would be easier for me since I could just forward on anything I find about Peter rather than trying to compile a newsletter, and anyone else who wanted to post announcements would be able to.
