Explanation of the conversion: The Instant Change to any costume was based on her demonstrated ability to change her costume with an act of will.
History: Karla was born in Van Nuys, Californian and grew up in Hollywood as the daughter of a butler and maid of millionaire producer Charles Stockbridge. She grew up seeing all the things power and money could buy, and wanted it for herself. After her father died at the age of 42 from a heart attack Karla and her mother left for Van Neys together. Her mother worked hard to send Karla to the best schools, where she became a psychology major. She was determined to exploit weakness in others and only look out for herself (recounted in Thunderbolts #25).
As Dr. Karla Sofen she was a small time psychiatrist who purposely prolonged her patents treatments to get more money out of them. She attended a convention where Dr. Leonard Samson gave a lecture on
ethics (Thunderbolts: Distant Rumblings #1).
She was assigned to evaluate Lloyd Bloch, and she hypnotized him into giving her the Moonstone power and she became Moonstone II (recounted in Incredible Hulk II #229).
Moonstone II was a member of the Masters of Evil IV during their siege of Avengers Mansion. After the plan fell through, Moonstone attempted to flee, but was pursued by Captain Marvel II. Moonstone panicked and ended up running head first into a stone wall in New Jersey, paralyzing herself. (Avengers #273-277).
Karla became a permanent resident of Mercy Hospital in her paralyzed state until she was accidentally healed by Volcana, who was unknowingly wielding the power of the Molecule Man. After escaping the hospital she confronted Volcana and was defeated by her and taken into custody (Fantastic Four Annual #23).
Lloyd, now calling himself Nefarius, made his way to the courthouse where Moonstone II was on trial for her criminal acts. He kidnapped her and intended to kill her, but Moonstone II was able to distract him until Quasar III and Captain America were able to follow him. Nefarius was eventually laid low by a twin blast of Moonstone II's energy beams directly in both ears. Nefarius and Moonstone II were taken to the Vault, a prison for super criminals (Captain America #379).
She was serving time in the Vault she was among the prisoners who tried to break out of the Vault but were stopped by Freedom Force and the Avengers (The Vault Graphic Novel).
Nefarius and Karla broke free again. Karla was among the super-powered women who attacked Captain America and Paladin aboard the S.S. Superia (Captain America #389).
Karla was eventually captured and sent to the Vault, and later so was Nefarius. Once Nefarius was there he broke free and attacked Moonstone II. Hercules, Giant-Man and Vision II managed to defeat Nefarius after a fierce battle, and Black Widow convinced Moonstone II to surrender and return to custody peacefully lest she face further charges (Avengers Unplugged #1).
Karla was subsequently recruited by Baron Zemo II as part of the Thunderbolts scheme under the guise of Meteorite II in a new costume.
Karla fought alongside the Thunderbolts and the Heroes For Hire to defeat the Super Adaptoid (Heroes For Hire #7).
Karla turned on Zemo, helping Jolt II and the rest of the Thunderbolts to defeat the Baron and save the Avengers and Fantastic Four. Karla then decided to return to her Moonstone II identity and design a third costume for herself. When kidnapped to another dimension with her fellow Thunderbolts Karla killed the Kosmosian Primotur in a plot to get them returned home (Thunderbolts #14).
During a fight with the Lightning Rods, Karla brutally defeated Big Birtha and stole Doorman's clothes to escape S.H.I.E.L.D. (Thunderbolts #16).
Karla was instrumental in accidentally freeing Graviton from a extra-dimensional prison, but helped stop his rampage by reasoning with him that the fight was pointless (Thunderbolts #17).
With the Thunderbolts, Moonstone II helped stop a bank robbery in Boulder, Colorado and were approached from some kids who escaped from Burton Canyon. They reported that an army called the Imperial Forces had taken over the town and no one would help. The Thunderbolts infiltrated the town and were confronted with Charcoal the Burning Man. After allowing themselves to be captured in civilian identities, Moonstone II snuck in with their costumes and they broke out the other captives and fought Charcoal. During the fight the Masters arrived told them they had to make up their minds soon about joining them, and Charcoal escaped (Thunderbolts #19).
When the other Thunderbolts decided they needed a new leader, she reluctantly accepted Hawkeye, deciding that he could be manipulated to suit her plans. Karla was instrumental in bargaining their escape from the police and intimidating Hydra into not pursuing the Thunderbolts (Thunderbolts #0).
Karla was able to finally gain a pardon thanks to a deal cut by Hawkeye, but under the agreement that she agreed to not use her power and to avoid heroic activities. She left the Thunderbolts (Thunderbolts #50).
Karla was then approached by Graviton about expanding his the understanding of his powers. Karla played along with Graviton, pretending to join him.
Through a mixture of surprise tactics and negotiation, all of the Thunderbolts managed to fight Graviton to a standstill and revealed that the aliens known as the P'Tah were using Graviton's energies to open a portal to the P'Tah's dimension. The Thunderbolts fought back the P'Tah invasion, but it took Graviton's dying effort to cause the portal to implode, sending himself and the P'Tah back. At the same time, Graviton saved the Thunderbolts from a similar fate, using his powers to send them to the planet known as Counter-Earth (Thunderbolts #58-59).
On Counter-Earth Jolt II, Moonstone II, Fixer II, Atlas and MACH-3 woke up in Russia confronted by that world's Thunderbolts. Fixer II and Moonstone II were able to fast talk their way out of being attacked. They decided to help some local people during a famine and work they way to Germany, in hopes of using their new space program to return to Earth. The Fixer II also learned that the digital essence of Baron Zemo II had been pulled out of Citizen V II and was now living in his tech-pack (Thunderbolts #60).
The Thunderbolts arrived in Germany and were able to get themselves close to a new communications satellite that was being launched by that world's Thunderbolts. Fixer II was able to download the essence of Baron Zemo II into the body of that world's counterpart. When the Thunderbolts were unable to take the satellite for themselves and discovered it was going to be used to control all the world's communications, they destroyed it rather then let Germany rule the planet (Thunderbolts #62).
The Thunderbolts began to establish themselves as the leading super heroes of the troubled Counter-Earth.
Moonstone II the confronted the Phantom Eagle, Counter-Earth's counterpart to the original Moonstone. Lloyd use unstable and a killer, so Karla was able to restrain him and take his moonstone as well as doubling her powers.
Trivia: Karla is in no way connected to the original Meteorite, who was a member of the Resistants formerly known as Lifter. There seems to be no connection between Karla and Meteorite III who is a member of the Redeemers.
Powers: Karla has access to the Moonstone, one of several ancient gems of power. This gem allows her to control gravity and light, as well as making her stronger and granting her the ability to make any clothing she wants on her body. She can fly, turn herself and others intangible, survive in space and release light to either blind opponents or fire a powerful laser.
At one time the Moonstone allowed her access to the knowledge of it's former Kree bearer, but it no longer does. While she had access to that knowledge she could speak the Kree language.
