Explanation of the conversion:
History: Melissa Gold grew up in a trailer park in Shoshoni, Wyoming. She ran away from home at an early age because of her abusive father and friends, and her mother being in jail. She took on the tough persona of Mimi to
protect herself from the hard life on the streets (Thunderbolts Distant Rumblings #1).
Mimi became one of the Grapplers, female pro wrestlers who turned to costumed crime. She received bionically enhanced vocal powers from Roxxon Oil, while most of the other members of the Grapplers received strength augmentation treatments. After unsuccessful bouts with heroes such as the Thing, Quasar III,
Giant-Man II and Dazzler, the Grapplers went back to the wrestling circuit full-time. She joined the female division of the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation (Thing #33).
Mimi continued her criminal career, though, briefly joining the dreaded Masters of Evil before embarking on an equally brief partnership with similarly empowered super-crook Angar the Screamer. Mimi was among the super-powered women who attacked Captain America and Paladin aboard the S.S. Superia (Captain America #390).
Mimi joined several other former Masters of Evil under Baron Zemo II in assuming new identities as the supposedly super-heroic Thunderbolts team. Thus disguised, Mimi became known as Songbird.
As Songbird, Melissa started a romantic relationship with MACH-1, who was formerly the super villain known as the Beetle. MACH-1 helped her train in aerial combat.
Songbird was instrumental in helping the Thunderbolts defeat the Elements of Doom II (Thunderbolts #8).
Melissa fought alongside the Thunderbolts and the Heroes For Hire to defeat the Super Adaptoid (Heroes For Hire #7).
With the Thunderbolts, Songbird helped stop a bank robbery in Boulder, Colorado and were approached from some kids who escaped from Burton Canyon. They reported that an army called the Imperial Forces had taken over the town and no one would help. The Thunderbolts infiltrated the town and were confronted with Charcoal the
Burning Man. After allowing themselves to be captured in civilian identities, Moonstone II snuck in with their costumes and they broke out the other captives and fought Charcoal. During the fight the Masters arrived told them they had to make up their minds soon about joining them, and Charcoal escaped (Thunderbolts #19).
Melissa was able to finally gain a pardon thanks to a deal cut by Hawkeye, but under the agreement that she gave up her sonic harness and agreed to avoid heroic activities. She and Abe left the Thunderbolts together (Thunderbolts #50).
When Graviton attempted to take over the Earth again and was able to defeat the Redeemers, Citizen V IV ordered the V Battalion to send him a new Songbird harness and their MACH-3 armor, which he used to recruit Abe and Melissa into becoming heroes again to fight Graviton, along side the resurrected Atlas II (Thunderbolts #57).
Note: In the Avengers Forever limited series, a Songbird from a possible future joins in a quest to protect Rick Jones from Immortus. In the future she is from she is a member of the Avengers. She appears similar to the Songbird of the Thunderbolts, but her belt buckle has an A instead of a lightning bolt on it.
Powers: As Songbird, Melissa has a bionic throat that, when combined with a special harness designed by Techno that imitate the powers of Klaw, master of sound, creating of solidified sound constructs. These constructs last only so long as Songbird concentrates her scream upon them, and are usually rather simple forms such as spheres, shields, nets and pincers. Her skill with these constructs continues to increase and she can maintain several at one time. Her most common sound construct is a set of wings that enables her to fly. Mimi is also an experienced wrestler, though she relies more on her mouth than her muscles since obtaining her vocal powers. Now that the Thunderbolts no longer use the V Jet for transportation of it's non-flying members, Songbird often carries her teammates Jolt II and Atlas II on a disk of sound while flying under her own power.
The Grapplers' first major criminal employer, Roxxon Oil, had its' scientists surgically alter Mimi to give her superhuman vocal powers. Her screams could produce deafening sound, stun listeners into unconsciousness with hypersonic vibrations, or cause her victims to experience terrifying hallucinations. When she combined her powers with those of Angar, the duo were able to produce realistic illusions by harmonizing their screams. After Angar's death, she screamed until her voice box was destroyed.
