Opinion. Best known, in the West, for playing leading roles in several films by Polish director Andrzej Wajda, including Man of Marble (Człowiek z marmuru, 1976) and Man of Iron (Człowiek z żelaza, 1981).

Early days. She is a graduate of the State Fine Arts Secondary School and in 1975 she graduated from the State Drama School in Warsaw. She has also graduated from the Music School of the First Degree and the Ballet College at the Warsaw Operetta. Krystyna Janda made her debut during her studies. She played Masha in “The Three Sisters” by Anton Chekhov in the TV Theatre performance.

Career. Her theatre debut was the role of Aniela in “Maidens’ Vows” in the Ateneum Theatre in Warsaw and then the part of Dorian Gray in “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde in the Mały Theatre in Warsaw. Her first film part was in 1976 in Andrzej Wajda’s “Man of Marble”.In 1982, Janda played the lead character in Ryszard Bugajski's film Przesłuchanie (Interrogation), which first premiered in 1989, following the collapse of communism. Despite the film's late release, she garnered international acclaim for her performance.. Janda is also known for her leading part in the second episode of The Decalogue series of Krzysztof Kieślowski. Since 1980ies she acts continuously in cinema and TV movies and in the theater plays. In 2005 she also started her own private theater in Warsaw, Polonia Theater and directed theater and TV plays. In the theater she played about 60 parts starting with antique and Shakespeare to the contemporary Polish and international plays. Her greatest success was Euripides’ Medea. She also played about 45 parts in the TV Theater and about 50 parts in motion pictures. Janda is one of Andrzej Wajda’s favorites actresses. She also sings, directs, writes and she published 6 disks and 5 books. Janda writes feuilletons for the monthly PoradnikDomowy.

Private. She married Andrzej Seweryn who died in 1979 (they had a daughter Maria) and then in 1981 she married Edward Kłosiński who died in 2008. They had two sons: Adam and Jedrzej.

Honors and awards. 1981: Silver Asteroid , International Festival of Sci-Fi Movies Triest (Italy) (best female role in the festival); 1989: Golden Cross of Merit (Poland); 1990: Vittorio de Sica Medal (Italy); Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival (France); 1991: Ordre des Arts et des Lettres , Classe III (France), 1992: Silver Shell, Film Festival at San Sebastian (Spain). ; 1996 Super Złota Kaczka for the best actress in the history of Polish film; 2002: Officer of the Order of Merit (Poland); 2005:Gold Medal Zasłużony Kulturze Gloria Artis (Poland); 2006 Medaille Charlemagne pour des Medias Européens for an extraordinary acting achievement and for proeuropean attitude (france); 2011: Commander's Cross with Star of the Order Polonia Restituta (Poland).
