Name: Kyle Rayner
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 175
Eyes: Dark green
Hair: Black
Abilities: The last Green Lantern. Has the most powerful weapon in the
universe--a ring that can create anything he wills.
Origin: When Hal Jordan, the previous Green Lantern of Earth, went berserk and
rebelled against the Guardians of the Universe, only one Guardian managed to survive
the onslaught. Ganthet, the last Guardian, took the last power ring and travelled to
Earth. Too weak to stay on Earth long enough to seek out an ideal candidate, Ganthet
simply handed it to the first human he came across with the encouraging comment, "You'll
have to do."
That human was Kyle Rayner, a comic book artist who had no knowledge of why a
blue midget in a red robe had just handed him a ring.
After a little practice, a few run-ins with supervillains, and a lot of help
from his girlfriend Alex DeWitt, Kyle mastered
the basics of the power ring.
Kyle's girlfriend, Alex, encouraged the sometimes frivolous Green Lantern to take
his new responsibility seriously . . . but when the government sent Major Force to
take the power ring, Alex was killed and left in the fridge for Kyle to find.
Distraught, Kyle considered giving up the ring, but in the end he decided to keep it and become
the kind of hero that Alex believed he could be.
Before he could recover from that shock, Superman and Metron summoned him to help fight
a force that was disrupting time and reality . . . a force that turns out to be none other
than Hal Jordan, the former Green Lantern of Earth who had decimated the
now-defunct Green Lantern Corps. Now calling himself Parallax
and wielding unbelievable power, Hal tried to reform the universe to his liking, claiming
it would be an improvement.
The new Green Lantern (with help from the other heroes of Earth) fought and defeated Parallax
before returning to Earth.
Unlike previous Green Lantern rings, the last ring does not
have a weakness to yellow. It is attuned to Kyle's DNA and cannot be used by anyone else
(unless they're related to him or if he wills the ring to obey another.)
For a short time, Kyle gained unlimited power and called himself "Ion"; however, he
expended most of his energy reigniting the main power battery on Oa and resurrecting the
Guardians.
Personality:
Without a superhero mentor, Green Lantern has had to learn his abilities and limitations
on his own. Due to his training as an artist, Kyle's green constructs tend to be more
creative than those of previous Green Lanterns.
Due to his relative inexperience, Kyle is often plagued with self-doubt, especially when
he is inevitably compared to Hal Jordan. This is especially noticeable when he
works with the rest of the Justice League, which Kyle has compared to "playing with the
Beatles."
Other Info:
Kyle had a short stint with the new Teen Titans before being recruited for the Justice League
of America.
His interactions with other members of the JLA are very interesting. He admires
Superman, practically regresses to high school around the Flash (after some initial tetchiness
on the Flash's part), and is scared stiff of Batman.
