For a thousand years, the Sith were beleived to be extinct. Enter Darth Maul. Maul was the first apprentice to Darth Sidious (that we know of) and was trained by Sidious at a young age. He bears red and black tattoos all over his body as a symbol of his devotion to the Sith order. Maul is a Zabrak, the same species as Jedi Master Even Piell, but most interesting about him is his unconvential choice of weapon: he wields a double-bladed lightsaber, the first to do so in thousands of years since the age of Exar Kun. Maul's chance to defeat the Jedi came at last during the Naboo Blockade Crisis, when he encountered Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Maul managed to take out the Jedi Master, but without warning was felled by Kenobi.Sidious replaced Maul soon after with the Separatist leader Count Dooku.
