Padmé was a natural-born leader. She had a great political interest even as a child, and involved herself in political studies. By age 14, she had been elected the Queen of her home planet, Naboo. Just after her election, the Trade Federation blockaded her small, relatively defenseless planet and invaded it. With the aid of the Jedi Knights Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, she managed to get off-planet. In the effort, however, her Royal Starship was damaged and the Queen's party was forced to land on the remote desert planet of Tatooine. It was there that she met young Anakin Skywalker, a nine year old boy who was a slave. Her Jedi protectors saw potential in the boy, and he came with them to Coruscant to become a Jedi Knight. Ten years after the blockade crisis was resolved, Amidala's term had ended, but at the request of her people she became Senator of Naboo. The Republic, however, was changing; many systems under the leadership of Count Dooku had seceded from the Republic, and were now threatening it. Chancellor Palpatine, the previous Senator from Naboo, decided for the Senate to vote on the issue of creating an army to assisst the Jedi Knights, who were becoming somewhat limited in number. Amidala was the leading opposition of this vote, and after several attempts were made on her life, Anakin Skywalker (now a powerful Jedi Padawan) was assigned to protect her on her home planet.
It was there that the seeds of love began to blossom. The two eventually received word that Obi-Wan, who was looking for Padme's assassin, had been captured, and they went to rescue him on Geonosis--a futile effort that resulted in their capture. Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme were to be put to death in a large arena; however the Jedi had come to their aid. An enormous battle ensued which envolved the Republic's new army of clones; afterword Anakin and Padme eloped to Naboo and were married.
Padme later gave birth to a pair of twins, who were named Leia and Luke. By this time, Anakin had turned to the Dark Side of the Force, and the twins were forced to be hidden with foster parents in hopes that they could one day overthrow the Empire which Anakin Skywalker--now known as Darth Vader--was currently helping to rule.
The fate of Padme Amidala Skywalker is uncertain, but according to Leia Organa, she died when the children were very young. The mystery surrounding her death will be revealed in Episode III.
