Jeremy tried the Hornady 87 Vmax with several different charge weights, and reported that his rifle did not shoot them well. He also said the chrono was giving bad readings on several different range trips due to poor light conditions. Therefore, he suggested that several of the reported velocities are suspect.
Here are some notes he send along with his data.
The gun is a garden variety Win. M70 push feed long action. The barrel is a Pac-Nor, diam. 1.205", stainless, 1-12" twist. The stock, as you can see, is the Choate Ultimate Varmint. Scope is Leupold VariX-III 6.5-20X40, with Stoney point target knobs, fine duplex reticle. Trigger is tuned factory, breaks @14 oz., trigger work and chambering done by Rangemaster Gunworks, in Lebanon Oregon. Note extended base, and extended front ring, to get the scope far enough forward. I have a sort of long neck for my height, so end up a bit far forward on some stocks. The loading data is ALL using H4831, the old surplus stuff. Primers are CCI 200. Overall lengths, determined with Stoney Point OAL gauge, are nominally .010 off the lands. Most groups were shot over my car, using sandbags...I have a rack I put in the hitch reciever that allows me to shoot over the top, standing on the rack. It is an S-10 Blazer, and is very stable, as you can see. One or two days of the testing took place at real range, with real benches, but you can't tell it. I ultimately selected the 70 TNT's, with 54.0 H4831, but could just as well have chosen the 75 Hornady HP. Even the 75 V-Max was good, but few of the groups with 85-87 gr. bullets were very good, and they were better in unformed brass than in formed!
