Darien is a confusing character. When he was very young he was in a horrible car crash, both of his parents died. He survived, but was left with no memory. Darien has lived by himself most of his life.
When Darien was about 20, he started getting these strange signals inside his head. These signals were calling him to be Tuxedo Mask, friend and helper of the Sailor Scouts. He gets those signals every time the Scouts are in trouble. He usually jumps in at the last minute, flinging a rose at the enemy and giving a corny entrance speech. He makes his entrances in the strangest ways, you'll often see him appearing in trees, park benches and even on top of street lamps or cranes. Tuxedo Mask uses roses to attack the enemy (gee, how scary). He also uses his cane to attack, which extends for long distance attacks.
When the Scouts learned about their past in the Moon Kingdom, they found that Darien was a Prince from Earth. He and the Moon Princess Serena were in love. When Queen Beryl and Queen Metalica (the negaforce) attacked the Moon Kingdom, Prince Darien and his 4 earth generals, Jedite, Neflite, Zoisite and Malachite swore to protect the Kingdom. But Queen Beryl took the 4 generals and turned them evil.
Right before Queen Beryl blasted the Moon Kindom to peices, Queen Serenity, the wise and revered leader of the Moon Kingdom (and Princess Serena's mother) stored the souls of Pincess Serena, her court, the Outer Guardians and Prince Darien inside the Silver Crystal and sent them to Earth in the future. There, they would all be reborn to live happy lives on Earth. Serenity sent along the guardian cats, Luna and Artemis, as well. They were told to revive the Sailor Scouts if Queen Beryl was ever to attack for a second time.
Now if you don't think that's confusing, wait til ya hear this!
In the first season of Sailor Moon, Queen Beryl returned to Earth in the future. She took Darien captive and brainwashed him. Like his 4 generals in the past, Darien was made evil. While he was evil, he went by the name Prince Darien, even though he attacked the Scouts as Tuxedo Mask because it distracted them. He helped Queen Beryl fight the Sailor Scouts and tried to retrieve the 7 Rainbow Crystals for her (if he found all 7 crystals, they'd come together to make the Silver Crystal). As the evil Prince Darien/Tuxedo Mask, he threw black roses. After Sailor Moon and the Scouts beat Queen Beryl, he became good again.
After the final battle with Queen Beryl, like the other scouts, Dariens memory was completly erased. He didn't remember the Millenium, Tuxedo Mask, or Serena (which made Serena pretty upset when her own memory was restored). But deep inside, Darien still had a calling to help the Sailor Scouts. So when the Scouts needed help, a sort of secong Darien, or an incarnation of Darien, would go to their aid, The Moonlight Knight. The Moonlight Knight dressed like an arabian guy and threw white roses. He also had a cool sword thing.When Darien's memory was restored, Tuxedo Mask returned as well, so the Moonlight Knight wasn't needed anymore. He just left.
Shortly after the Moonlight Knight thing, Serena and Darien were out in the park and a pink haired girl fell out of the sky, right on top on the two love birds. Serena and Darien were soon to find out that this girl, Rini, was their daughter in the future. In the future, Serena and Darien are the rulers of the world, NeoQueen Serenity and King of Earth. They were always destined to be together.
A little bit after Rini's appearance, Darien began to have strange dreams. They would start out all happy, with Serena and Darien getting married. But then there would be a horrible earthquake and Serena would run away. A voice would say that if Darien got too close to Serena, something horrible would happen to her. Darien wasn't sure if he should listen to the dream, but after he had it a few times he decided that he couldn't take a chance by not listening to it. Serena was crushed and incredibly depressed, which hurt poor Darien so badly because he really did care about her and wanted to be with her. He simply didn't want to put her in any danger. When all the Scouts went to the future to help Rini, it was revealed that the voice in Dariens dream was Darien's future self, the King of Earth. He was testing to make sure Darien's love for Serena was strong and true, for if it wasn't they would never be able to face the challenges before them. Darien passed the test. It was then revealed to Serena and Darien that Rini was their future daughter.
Darien's power is psycometry, which means he can 'feel' things. He can sense good or evil in objects and/or people. He also has strange visions. Darien is a generally nice guy, though he's a jerk to Serena sometimes in the Anime (in the Manga he's such a sweetheart!). Though he doesn't have much fighting power, he is always there for the scouts when they need a confidence-boost.
