Logfile from Briny.

Main Beach - Monaco Weyr(#1298RFJMa$)

This long black sand beach extends as far as the eye can see in the west, but is broken to the east by the mouth of Monaco River. The sand sprawls in different formations; flat here near the Weyr buildings, with a slight fordune and then a broken basalt flat leading back up to the buildings. Wavy, rolling dunes rise across the river farther east. Occasional gusts of wind laden with sharp salt and mustier river scents riffle lighter sand over the flat beach, and from the quay at the western bank of the rivermouth comes the faint ring of clapper against bell.

On this beach, you can choose to 'hear ocean', or 'silence ocean'.

El'ric waits patiently for everyone to line up, "These sacks of firestone are your new friends from here until you are told otherwise you will carry a sack of firestone about with you at all times, the only time you will be excused from carrying it is when you go to dinner in the weyrhall." He starts pacing up and down the line as he continues "once you and your lifemates are old enough to fly support to the fighting wings you will be expected to be able to toss a full sack from one dragon to another safely while you are flying, you need to build your muscles up and this is the start." He stops his pacing "Now onto todays lesson open you sack and have a rummage inside, you will find that firestone comes in different grades, the miners here will be able to tell you the difference between them, but you will need to be able to do this yourself as well. Can anyone tell me the difference?"

Briny isn't so much a straggler, except that Belynth is being a bit pokey today. Head lifted way high, he is looking to the skies. Such marvelous skies... and it is only through Briny leading him forward with fingers curled in his riding straps does the blue actually move. But, they make it, moving into line. Sack? What sack? Briny shoots an alarmed glance across to Bella, murmuring, "Where do I get a sack?"

Bella stares at El'ric and then down to the sack. she is already rubbing her shoulder as is. She thinks about kicking the sack but thinks better of it. With a sigh, she opens the cured sack and pulls out the first stone her hand touches. It looks just like any other piece of firestone to her. And smells as bad too. Glancing between the other weyrlings, she shrugs and shakes her head, not knowing the differances.

El'ric walks over to M'ik who as extra punishment had to carry out three sacks of firestone. Selecting one of teh bags he hands it to the first in line "everyone take a couple of piece from this sack its, poor quality firestone and we'll arrange a test for you all." he steps back allowing the weyrlings to sort themselves out for sacks and the like and he continues his pacing "once you've got your sample of bad firestone have a good look and then feed it to your lifemate," by this point he's reached the end of the line and stays there out of the way "They need to chew it up and when they swallow you need to make sure they are visualising thier second stomach. Then off you go your lifemate will do the rest and flame and then probably regurgitate out some ash."

Briny eventually does find herself a sack, all the while Belynth is still staring up at the heavens for no reason other than vague fascination. With a grump, the girl reaches into the the thing, rummaging around to peer at this bit of rock and that. Rock. It is really all the same to her. But if there are differences, she'll take that as a given. Bad firestone, eh? More rummaging ensues 'til she finds something that she assumes looks bad and from there tugs on Belynth's straps. *tug-tug-tug* Blue looks down enough for Briny to hop up, curl one arm around the blue's head and drag him down. "Chew this..." The rest is relayed other ways. Blue sniffs and opens his maw for the offering to chew. *crunch*

Bella looks to Lyranth as she nods at El'ric's instructions. She holds out the stone and Lyanth extends her muzzle to inspect it. She rears her head back << IT does not smeel nice. >> Bella blushes at her lifemate's comment "The smell doesn't matter. It's the flame you will produce that matters." Lyranth grugingly opens her muzzle to accept the stone "Be careful Lyran. Watch out to not catch your tongue on your teeth." She peeks around before her gaze slips over to Lyranth once more "Now he said you need to think about your second stomach. Are you thinking about your second stomach Lyranth?" << I am. >>she crunches and chews slowly. Bella meanwhile is reaching down for another bit of stone and has it ready for Lyranth if she wants it.

El'ric watches patiently as the group of weyrlings ready themselves and coax their lifemates to chew the foul smellign stuff, "Okay if everyone is ready point your lifemate downwind and flame."

Briny peers up at Belynth, and promptly is sprinkled with rock crumbs. She scuttles out of the way, still watching him. The blue swallows, visibly, sticking out his tongue afterwards. "Ewww, eh?" Dragon bobs his head, settling himself. *ruuummmmmble* That'd be his tummy. "Belynth?" *URP* A tiny tongue of flame licks from his nose, followed by a puff of smoke. He looks a little alarmed at Briny. Help? There is another rumble and the girl is abruptly pointing down-course, "There! There!" *whoosh* Rather whimpy belch, that one.

Lyranth takes the second piece and chews as she concentrates on her second stomach. Bella glances around to see Belnyth and Briny. At the flame Belnyth produces, she smiles "Way to go Belnyth!" She cheers for her fellow weyrling's bond then turns her attention to Lyranth. The green's eyes seem to widen and Bella pushes gently to turn Lyranth downwind. Suddenly Lyranth rears her head back before she extends her body forward with her muzzle opening. A small puff of flame accompany a cloud of smoke.

"Good, now remember the regurgitation of ash, they won't always do it but just be prepared." El'ric calls out as he shouts down the line to M'ik "Now hand out that other sack. This one coming down is good quality stuff again take a few lumps and examine it, you'll find its a darker colour, which means it has more of the chemicals in it that produce the flames." Again he stays right where he is at the end of the line, "now when your ready do the same again with the good stuff and you should see something more like you would have been expecting."

Belynth seems a little startled at that bit of flame, and then he is looking awfully delighted. Ready to croon a rather pleased note, a cloud of smoke floats from his maw. Ohhhhhh. But, then he spots Lyranth's rather more impressive flame, and is immediately pouting. Tail reaches around to nudge his mate. More. More. I want more. More flame! The blue perks at the concept of better stuff, and is nudging Briny forward to get some as well. She does so, with a little grumbling, tossing the more substantial rock into his mouth. Chewing resumes, the blue tenses. Wait for it... Wait for it. *Whoosh* "Oooooo. That was nice, Belly." She is shooting a glance over to Bella and 'mate, smile warm.

Bella grins at the little poof of flame Lyranth produces. The green is delighted and bounces in place. Bella reaches out for a piece of better quality stone and places it in Lyranth waiting open muzzle. "Now remember Lyra. Watch out for your tongue and think of your second stomach." She offers encouragingly as the green chews. After a few minutes Lyranth sends out a short, thin jet of flame. Bella jumps up and down as the smoke and stench of firestone burn her eyes "That was great Lyranth!" The congrats is short lived however as Lyranth lowers her head and proceeds to get rid of some of the ashe, right on Bella's feet. The weyrling winces and cringes at teh same time as she looks up to the sky chanting "That did not just happen. That did not just happen. That did not just happen. That did not just happen." Poor Bella. Those were almost new sandals too.

El'ric chuckles a little at the antics and excitement this exercise produces "Okay weyrlings you each have your own sack of assorted firestone, you need to start sorting it into good and bad quality chunks and I want your lifemates to be your guide, the've tasted the difference now as well, I want all the good stuff to have been flamed off. I'm sure your lifemate will tell you if your're getting it wrong." he starts to work his way up the back of the line "If anyone has any questions remember and ask, and always remember and flame downwind."

Briny startles back a space as she eyes Lyranth's rather inelegant purging and Bella's poor sandals. "Ohhhh, that's-" And the, abruptly, Belynth is making noises. Bad noises. Really bad noises. Tummy heaves, chest expands, neck jerks and the blue's eyes are whirling awfully fast. Another point of her finger, "Over there! Over there!" Blue complies, but only just barely. Briny smirks at the ash before looking back at the firestone once more. Joy. Sorting rock. She pushes the best ones into a pile for Belynth to gobble up and try a few more flames.

Bella does not want to look down at ehr feet, but does so reluctantly. With a sigh, she steps out of her sandals and leaves then where they are for the time being, though she does kick a bit of sand over them for now. She sets about sorting out the stone and offers Lyranth chunks of the good stuff. As the green chews she watches Bella's work << That one is not good. >> The weyrling chuckles and takes the stone she just tossed in the good pile and puts it in teh weak pile.

El'ric keeps pacing about behind the line where his laughing at the reactions will go better unnoticed. He stops by Bella and Briny "Just need to remember and keep them pointing downwind at /all/ times." he smiles a bit cheekily at Bella before stepping back to resume his pacing as he doles out more words of wisdom. "Remember once your flying fall properly in your wings you'll be going through a lot of firestone, depending on the size of your dragon will depend how many but typically you can be expecting anywhere between 10 for a light one and upto 30 for a heavy one."

Belynth is pointed downwind, you betcha. Briny makes well and sure of this as every so often he belches out a flame of sorts. The girl blink and looks back over to El'ric, and then wincing at what he has to stay. "Who knew being a dragonrider would make a girl buff..."

El'ric laughs as he hears Brinys's comment "Every full rider in this weyr has to be able to toss those sacks around so everyone is fit, healthy and strong." He continues on his way "The other thing that we will be starting tomorrow, is sack tossing where you will start practising throwing saks of firestone at..." theres a pause "sorry. /to/ each other."

Briny shoots a glance back to El'ric before wincing once more at what he has to say. "At each other?" she echoes, frowning. Why does that sound rather... scary. Uneasily, she shoots a glance at the blue, who is shooting a glance right on back to her. Abruptly, Belynth burps, purging himself of ash as well. Bleh.

El'ric nods "It should help practise you aim so you don't knock a wingrider from the back of his dragon." he smiles before goign onto his finishing piece, "Well thats this class almost over, just about everyone should have a pile of ash, a pile of bad firestone and an empty sack, get shovelling I want this beach clean by the time your leaving, you can pick up a fresh sack to be your buddy on the way back to the barracks."

Bella watches as Lyranth shoots more flame and she finsihes her sorting. When Lyranth is out of flame, the weyrling makes sure she is well out of the way before her lifemate get's rid of more ashe. As she hears the next task, Bella frowns a little "We have to carry those heavy things everywhere? And through them at each other?" Hmm. That doesn't seem very back friendly.

Briny scowls after El'ric as now.. they have to clean up. Ick. Well, can't be that much worse than cleaning out the couch, can it? With a resigned sigh, the bluerider gets to work, thanking whatever that Belynth isn't a much larger brown. Bigger dragons make bigger messes.
