FLASHBACK The Que Club, Birmingham 20th June 1998 |
PILGRIM was equally good, again ripping up the joint with some more anthems from back in the day, before the 'lords of the dance' themselves, the RATPACK came bouncing onto the stage for an awesome 60 minutes of old, new and improved tunes from both their own and others' catalogues. The crowd was really wild at this point, obviously appreciating the "new oldskool" they were playing for the first time ever, and the 30-odd albums being chucked sporadically in the audience's direction. The stage/podium in the centre where we were often seemed like collapsing, such was the force of everyone jumping up and down in time to the beats, and it was a pity in many ways when the next turntable maestro stepped up to control the decks.
Now, I have nothing against GROOVERIDER per se, but when you're expecting 8 hours of oldskool hardcore, you don't want to hear stuff that you could quite easily find in your local shop's drum 'n' bass rack the next day. OK as his set was (apparently dating back to '94, not that I could tell), 75 minutes of jump-up wasn't what I was looking for, so I retired gracefully to the confines and deity-like heights of the balcony to overview the proceedings.
Which is exactly where I decided to stay for the last set of the night by the mighty SY. Although he was slightly less fortunate than the others with many of his tunes already having been spun several times already that night, it was still an excellent set with many classics to sing along to easily enough.
It was a fitting end to a great evening's entertainment, and, Grooverider's dodgy choice of records aside, one of the better events I've attended. Let's hope there's another one soon!
