FLASHBACK The Que Club, Birmingham 24th February 2001 |
Into my 4th year of going to Flashback and things never seem to let up. With Raindance cancelled at short notice Birmingham needed to show that there was still going to be a premier oldskool event taking place this weekend and this was proven in style!
Arriving at 10pm there was a short queue and then in quickly past friendly security to the sounds of PILGRIM laying down some serious grooves. This guy is one of the unsung heroes of the oldskool scene and he didn't let us down. "Mr Kirk's Nightmare" was the highlight, but to be honest this was a classic set throughout.
Next up was Flashback resident and promoter MISTRESS MO with her best set ever. With a no-show from Nicky Blackmarket, Mo was forced to play a marathon 2 hour set that swung from 1991 rave through to proto-jungle grooves, but th8is merely proved what a quality DJ she is. Force Mass Motion, Toxic 2, Cleptomaniacs and more were pulled from the box and this was one of the most banging sets I've ever heard at this event. Superb - this lady deserves greater recognition for her work!Meanwhile I met with Reg P, Karen G and Nitesh C - shout outs to you all!
Then on to a new face for Flashback, but not for the hardcore world - DOUGAL! Starting with "Playing With Knives", we were given a voyage through the rave world ending on a happycore vibe with "Steamtrain" and other classics to give the crowd a set not often seen in Birmingham. Awesome.
And from happy we went to jungle - and who better than the don MICKEY FINN. There's always a crowd swell when he's on the decks and yet again this was the case. Hitting the spot, this is one guy who'll always be back to cause more damage!
Finally we had the return of Slipmatt and Lime together as one - SL2 had arrived. Another trip through time with classics like "On a Ragga Tip" and "Breaking Free" made this a great end to another memorable night.
Respect to Mo, Jimmy and the whole Flashback crew for the best oldskool night outside London.
