From the Very Depths and Back: Part 2

Every sound seemed to be of a deep, thundering cry. Thump, thump, thump. Olek's heart beat like a thousand drums in unison. Through that small hole in the wall he could see only what his every nightmare could imagine. A Nazi soldier was inspecting the room.

Every step, every blink of an eye was a deafening impulse. Olek sweated madly as he urged himself not to breathe, for even the soft whimper of his breath may trigger the soldier's attention. He wanted so badly to just look over for a moment and his mother and sister, but alas this could make noise. Olek felt his insides burn with the lack of oxygen, and he wanted to cry out, but he somehow kept in the pain.

He could stand it no more. Ever so slowly, he diminished the pale air from his lungs, exchanging it with the hot, stuffy from inside their hole. Olek could feel the hot air sweep down his dry throat. He wanted to choke, but somehow kept the urge tucked away.

The eminent happened. Thump. Olek knew it to be true. His baby sister had knocked her tiny foot on the walls converging his family.

"HALT!" the soldier cried. The yell had broken the chain silence, which had embedded the room during the last few climactic moments. Boom, boom. Olek could feel the vibrations of the soldiers steps sweep the floor, and his mind. There was an eerie moment, and all was silent.

Suddenly, the walls converged. Woodchips flew inside their hole and the butte of the Nazi's gun collided into the wall. An effervescent, blinding swept the stuffy air. Olek flinched as another blow smashed the wall into flying debris. Olek turned to his mother in the light, only to see tears. Olek could not help but worry himself.

Everything seemed to be a blur. Olek felt his mind start to twirl with confusion as he slowly raised himself from that hole in the wall. His mother was crying, the baby in her arms whimpering as well. The Nazi yelled in his face, his spit hitting Olek's cheeks. Olek stood his ground, desperately wanting to throw a punch at the man insulting him.

As Olek helped his mother up, he suddenly felt a sharp pain on his lower back. An evil sensation rushed to his mind, causing him to fall, leaving his straggling mother's hand to drop helplessly. He winced, and opened his eyes to see an evil man starting down at him.

He had a sinister grin. His helmet bore the symbol Olek learned to fear and hate. Olek looked at him between his tired eyes and before him stood a masked symbol of all that was wrong in the world. All Olek could see in his mind, nightmare and thought, was that Nazi symbol and the dangers it may bring....
