It was a brief smile
It seemed but a minute,
Driving, Driving…
Arrival.
Slumber came to sweep us from our dreams.
And I watched
You softly snoring, watching the clock.
Sleep found me.
Morning came to shake us of our drowsy heads.
What was so important that night?
What made that night stand out from all the others of my pathetic existence?
You were there.
And for that brief moment,
Mine.
I tucked away my thoughts of forever,
tried to enjoy what I had.
Somehow though, I knew
That would never be enough.
I reached for you with both hands,
Not wanting to be greedy
But not willing to let go
Or even so much as share you.
But you,
Stuck in the middle.
Leaving him to come to me,
Leaving me to go back to him.
And me,
Confused, anticipatory, unable to
Admit that we’ll never have what we want.
