Captain Kathryn Janeway

HER EARLY YEARS

Kathryn, a Human, was raised in Indiana on Earth with her sister, who was the artist in the family. Her childhood included backpacking trips, camping, cooking, and gardening, all of which she thoroughly hated. As an adult she learned to find gardening satisfying, but still claims to be a "child of the 24th century". Kathryn's interests leaned towards the mathematics and science fields even from an early age. She enjoyed building the models of da Vinci. Kathryn began studies in ballet when she was six years old, learning the "Dance of the Dying Swan". Kathryn once performed the ballet on the Voyager talent night and it was a complete hit. Kathryn played tennis throughout her childhood. She was on her high school tennis team. She was very competitive and when she was 12 she once walked home 7 kilometers because she was disappointed in losing a tennis match. Kathryn was always a daring child, even sneaking out of her house late at night. Her father was a Three Star Admiral in Starfleet, who nicknamed her Little Bird. He died over 15 years ago when he drowned under the polar icecap on Tau Ceti Prime. His death was devastating to Kathryn and she fell into a deep depression.

STARFLEET

Kathryn's love of science led her to desire a career in Starfleet. She attended the Academy, where she claimed to be the master of the "all-nighter". Beyond the standard courses, she took Klingon physiology from Professor Holk, which has proven helpful with her half-Klingon engineer. After the Academy she took a position as a science officer on the Al-Batani for the Arias expedition. The ship was captained by Admiral Paris (Tom´s father). Tom once noted that Kathryn must have been a good officer, because his father only accepted the best. When she was a lieutenant she was stationed at a Federation outpost that was under ground attack by the Cardassians. She risked her life saving one of the dying Cardassians. Kathryn and her unit were victorious against the Cardassians and were highly decorated.
Kathryn was always driven to succeed and eventually switched from the science division to command. She was promoted to Captain and given commission of her first ship about nine years ago. After her first command Kathryn was given a review board in front of three Starfleet Admirals. Tuvok was brought in during the review and highly criticized her tactical procedures during the mission. That was the first meeting of the two, and now Tuvok is one of her closest friends and counsel. Kathryn was later given the first commission of the USS Voyager when it was launched in 2371.

CAPTAIN OF VOYAGER

Kathryn´s initial mission was to capture Maquis rebels, but when Voyager and the Maquis ship were swept to the Delta Quadrantrant the situation radically changed. She invited the Maquis crewmembers onto Voyager, not as prisoners, but as equals making the journey home together (”The Caretaker”). Kathryn decided they would remain a crew following Federation directives and principals and, remaining true to Starfleet's objectives, Voyager will explore space as they go. Occasionally she has been tempted to reevaluate the wisdom of following those ideals while so far from home, but has continued following the Federation ways. She is responsible for every life on Voyager, a fact that she doesn't take lightly. Her determination to get her crew home is unbreakable. Kathryn is a driven Captain, often pushing herself so hard she must be forced into time off or encouraged to even take a break to eat. Through her hard work and dedication she has earned the respect and absolute trust of her entire crew.

PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Kathryn left her fiancé Mark behind when Voyager was pulled across the galaxy. The two did not live together but shared an intimate relationship. He is tending to her dog, which was pregnant when Kathryn last saw her. Kathryn had mentioned missing Mark, but admitted after the last few years in the Delta Quadrant that he likely thinks she is dead and has moved on with his life. That prediction turned out to be true, when Voyager made contact with the Alpha Quadrant she received a letter that he had gotten married (”Hunters”). Although Voyager is roughly 60,000 light years from her old Alpha Quadrant life, and may never get back, Kathryn says she will not pair off with anyone. Chakotay revealed some feelings for her when they were stricken with a deadly disease and left alone to live out their lives on a planet that shielded then from the disease. She asked him to call her Kathryn. Their friendship grew closer and richer during that time,(”Resolutions”) leading Kathryn to ask Chakotay to join her for a champagne sail on the holographic Lake George. She admitted to Q that she would like to have a child someday, but would never have a baby with someone she doesn't love.

INTERESTS

Kathryn is an excellent pool player, which she demonstrated to the surprised Voyager crew at the holographic Sandrine's bar. Although she loves music, she never learned to play an instrument and regrets it (Remember). Kathryn has again taken up tennis, after 19 years of not playing. Kathryn has committed to Neelix that she will be giving regular updates on Voyager's progress on his audiovisual program. Kathryn actively encourages the arts on Voyager, including holonovels. She once enjoyed the holographic intrigue of playing a governess named Lucie Davenport in a mysterious gothic setting. As a governess, she revealed being rusty with Latin. She has studied American Sign Language. Her favorite holoprogram of late is the workshop of Leonardo da Vinci, where she enjoys the company of the artistic master. Under the tutelage of da Vinci she is beginning to sculpt with clay. She has also taken up painting. Her artistry once inspired her to make a baby blanket for Ensign Wildman's newborn baby. Kathryn enjoys skiing and relaxing by reading in bed, perhaps also curling up with a cup of her beloved coffee. Her most cherished way to relax is in the bathtub (”Resolutions”). Chakotay taught her how to contact her animal guide, a small lizard, for insight. While doing that she revealed her time of highest contentment was on a sandy beach (”The Cloud”).
Kathryn has shown her grit as a Captain faced with the trials of being the sole Starfleet vessel in the Delta Quadrantrant. She is a true leader, and won't ask anyone to do anything she wouldn't do herself. Her insight, compassion, and strength make her a Captain like no other.
