John Travolta Biography


John Travolta is a Hollywood star of the late 1970s and early '80s. Bright-eyed and boyish, Travolta first gained fame as Vinnie Barbarino, head "Sweathog" on the popular sitcom "Welcome Back, Kotter" which aired on ABC from 1975-79. His character was a dim-witted, swaggering bully but soon evolved into sweet-natured, vulnerable, and sexy teen idol. Travolta even recorded albums and found himself surrounded by teen fans at malls. John was featured as a teen cad who plots against Carrie. He made his way to stardom in the movie "Saturday Night Fever" (1977). Travolta's convincing helped made the film a huge hit and he was nominated for an Oscar. The film contributed to the growing popularity of disco with mainstream America. After the movie "Moment By Moment" Travolta stared in a romantic comedy drama co-starring Lily Tomlin. Travolta became more popular and proved himself a capable light romantic lead opposite Olivia Newton-John in the musical "Grease". "Grease" became one of the most grossed musicals of all time. Travolta's next movie "Urban Cowboy", featured the dancing lead in cowboy hat and boots as it tapped into America's ascendant interest in country-and-western culture. De Palma's "Blow Out" gave Travolta one of his most complex roles which was a dedicated film sound recordist who accidentally records a political assassination. The result was a richly shaded portrait of the hack artist as fallen idealist. The moviestalled at the box office. John Travolta made a strong commercial comeback in "Staying Alive" in which it was a sequel to "Saturday Night Fever". Slyvester Stallone directed the movie. Travolta faded away for nearly a decade because of unpopular films. His most notable work was during this phase was in a 1987 ABC-TV special "Harold Pinter's". The Dumb Waiter, a one-act two-character play directed by Robert Altman, in which Travolta played a Cockney hit man. Overall John Travolta has done many projects ranging from movies, television appearances, stage shows, and a number of albums. His albums include songs from the hit movie "Grease" such as "You're the One That I Want" and "Summer Nights", and solo albums such as "Let Her In" and "Razzamatazz".
