There are numerous reefs close to the coast line of Broken Bay . The three main systems are : West Reef , East Reef and the area loosely named Boultons .West Reef starts from the western end of Maitland Bay and extends in a South Easterly Direction . The easiest way to explain where the reef finishes is by traveling due east from the tip of Box Head . This reef system is approx. 3-4km long by about 0.5 -1km wide . The reef itself is quite lumpy and depths range from about 24M up to the shallowest depth I have got of 12M . Most punters usually fish the South Easterly tip . This area can produce fish but I have never found it as reliable as the area around the bomby .
The North Westerly end of the reef has a very shallow area which regularly has white water over it . This is where I feel most of the consistent action is . South West of the bomby there is a steep drop off which starts in the 12m zone and quickly falls away to 22m . Fish I have caught here include : Snapper , Very Large Trevally , Salmon , Tailor , Leather Jackets , Squid , Hairtail , Jewfish and numerous sharks too . Apart from this drop off motor around the general bomby area with a good sounder and you will discover numerous lumps , bumps and gutters . All good fish holding areas .
East Reef is very similar in shape and size to that of West Reef . East Reef begins at the Eastern end of Maitland Bay and also travels in a South Easterly direction . East Reef too has a bomby at the Northerly end and most of the good fishing is around this area . Numerous large Jewfish are taken from around the washes of the East Reef bomby in the warmer months . Flathead are scored in big numbers drifting the sandy gutter that seperates East reef from West Reef . One must note that the area from the beach at Maitland bay out to the bomby of East Reef is a marine reserve and cannot be fished .
