A VERY Basic Geography Lesson
This
map shows a closer view of the region often referred to as the
Balkans or Southeastern Europe. The colored areas make up Former
Yugoslavia. It was a federal republic consisting of 6 republics: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia (in cream
color), Montenegro and Macedonia.
Today, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Macedonia are independent countries. What confuses many people is that there is still a
country named Yugoslavia (though the United States has not
recognized it as a country). It is sometimes referred to as
"Rump Yugoslavia", meaning, what's left of Yugoslavia.
It is made up of two republics -Serbia and Montenegro.
The republic of Serbia contains two provinces which are
indicated by borders: Vojvodina in the north, and Kosovo in the
south. Since the 1999 bombing of Yugoslavia, Kosovo is a
"highly-autonomous" province.
