Kylia's weyr

Kylia's weyr

You enter Kylia's weyr, remembering she had been a candidate at a Weyr called Seascape. You had heard the eggs had hatched and wonder whether she got a gold or green. You glance around, but find nothing within the blue-tinted stone walls. The weyr seems fairly large, large enough for a small gold. Undoubtedly, not many were expecting the fragile, pale girl to Impress gold, what with her giant storm of fire-lizards--okay, only three, but more than the average Pernese has...

You are completely flabbergasted by the sight you see when you enter what you expect to be the main room. Crooning very sweetly on a dragon couch, is a tiny dragon, its hide a beautiful shade of... white? You blink several times. Yes, it is a white dragon. And stroking its head, murmuring to it softly, is Kylia.

Trymmeth, the most wonderful gift in the world...

You are silent, not wanting to interrupt the moment between dragon and rider. Kylia finally turns her adoring eyes off the now-sleeping hatchling and turns to you, and she immediatly blushes. "Oh, I'm so sorry!" she exclaims, although her soprano voice is muted so as not to rouse the dragonet. "I didn't notice you there, what with Trymmy and all..." She glances again at the white dragon. "So I guess you know now... I did Impress, and I got Trymmeth, my beautiful, beautiful Trymmeth..." She smiles very tenderly, then looks back at you. "I'm sorry, I keep doing that. I'm talking to someone and, poof, I start babbling about Trymmy." She shrugs and grins. "I suppose I'm just so overwhelmed. I mean, I was expecting a green...

"Oh, shells, now I'm very sorry! Mustn't bore you between with all my chatter about my dearest. I suppose you wonder what happened at the Hatching?" You nod, wanting to know, and she starts to talk.......

Kylia frowned at Zippy and Rush. "What's gotten into you two?" The two flits were trying to get her to dress into the white robe given to her for Impression. "What's going... Shells. Oh, great Faranth, SHELLS!" Almost near a curse, Kylia shoved her arms into the sleeves of the white dress as Lady, her green, appeared from between to join gold Zippy and brown Rush.

"Come on, you three! We have to get down there!" Kylia rushed out the entrance and, as fast as her short legs could carry her, burst into the Hatching Ground of Seascape Weyr, where the humming of the dragons was now beginning to grow louder. She sighed in relief and joined the other girls around the queen egg. She wasn't late. She glanced at the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader and noticed the Weyrwoman move her arm as if to thwack the Weyrleader for something he'd said, then change her mind and turn back to them. Kylia wanted to giggle, but instead just smiled and turned back to the queen egg. Suddenly, one of the eggs burst its shell, and a green dragonet stumbled out. After much confusion, she joined with Andrena.

The second egg was brown and chose Dirox. A green chose Sandi, and a blue chose Haddar. Three eggs hatched at the same time, a bronze, blue and green. The bronze and green tripped over each other, and the green didn't get up. Finally, after Kylia had started to worry, the green moved and chose Bryony as her mate. The blue decided to be an indiviual, and went towards the girls. He examined them all, and then chose Adlyna, causing the Weyrwoman to nearly have a heart attack with surprise--well, not really. It took awhile for the bronze to make its choice, but it finally--luckily--did, and chose Kayven, whom Kylia had met a few Turns before. Tippu got a blue, and the queen chose Elisabet....
"There were two eggs left, and two Candidates left. Nerill and Kylia exchanged hopeful glances as the larger of the two eggs wobbled back and forth, and then split.

As the brown tumbled out, Nerill hurried towards him. Their eyes met, and the little brown crooned as he Impressed the boy. As they left the hatching grounds, the brown stumbled, and Nerill helped him up, saying, "Careful, Veroth."

As the very last, small egg showed no signs of Hatching, people began to file down off the stands to go congratulate the Impressed.

"A dud," Maymara sighed. "How sad. Poor Kylia. Poor Jadeth! It must hurt a queen terribly to loose an egg." Then she, too, left the Hatching Grounds to talk with the new queenrider.

M'ran sighed and stepped down to the grounds to comfort Kylia. "It happens sometimes," he whispered, patting her shoulder.

Kylia just stared at the egg blankly. "It moved."

"What?"

"It moved."

M'ran took a step towards the egg. "It did?"

Kylia nodded silently and stepped to the egg's side. The egg trembled, then a small crack appeared in it's side. Kylia smiled faintly and began to stroke the egg. "It just needs some encourangement. When all the people left, it thought it was too late, but it isn't. I'm here. Now it knows."

M'ran cocked his head as he watched the crack lengthen slowly. "It must be a very small green to be so weak."

"I don't mind," Kylia said softly, still stroking.

Finally, the crack was large enough, and the little dragon burst free. M'ran gasped. "Faranth! A white!"

Kylia hugged the tiny white weyrling. "My white. Isn't she beautiful?"

M'ran nodded. "What's her name?"

There was a moment, of silence, then Kylia grinned at him. "Trymmeth"

"Well, Trymmeth, welcome. Welcome to Pern, and welcome to Seascape Weyr.""
[Quoted directly from the Hatching]

Kylia finishes her tale, and for a few moments, there is silence. Then you smile at her and nod your head, understanding. "So that's how I got my Trymmy. Everything's so... different now. Trymmy is the most beautiful thing--hmmm, no, person. Yes, I think we can call dragons people, can't we?" She grins again. "It doesn't feel right calling them 'things' or 'beasts' or 'animals.' They can talk, they're people, too."

She starts stroking her flits, and you notice she never let go of a small, pale yellow fire-lizard doll all through the time she talked to you. Then you remember she told you she never let it go; it was a gift from her father. "I'm beginning to think that maybe... Trymmeth has been the best gift ever given to me in my life..." Her eyes widen. "No, I mustn't lose this!" She jumps up, causing the flits to squawk protest, then runs over towards a piece of the new 'paper' being made, and starts to write. You relax as you realize she's writing down some kind of song. Thinking you've been there enough, you turn and leave, glancing once more at Trymmeth's white hide. You suddenly realize that Trymmeth isn't really white--she has bits of gold, brown, bronze, blue, and green peeking through her skin in the light. But you can't think of her anymore as you go to investigate the other weyrs.

Lady and Rush came from Scarant Weyr, Zippy came from Gallimim Weyr (sorry for the mix-up), and TRYMMETH THE WONDERFUL WHITE came from SEASCAPE WEYR which you must now go to and worship and submit your candidates because Trymmeth is the most wonderfulest thing in the world and she looks so absolutely adorable!!
