Kaylei's weyr

Kaylei's weyr

Iamarth, the great hungry hunting one without spots

You enter a cold, dark, stone weyr. You can't see anything, until a large blue weyrling knocks you down and warbles, moving its tail so that it looks like it's... wagging! A girl with black hair steps from another room, and slaps her forehead. "Iamarth! You are NOT a canine!" The weyrling tilts its head at her and croons, nuzzling her and getting off you.

She sighs and looks at you. "I'm sorry! Iamarth's been acting like this since he hatched. He thinks he's a canine with wings." She strokes the blue's muzzle. "Well, I guess it's an improvement over a purple dragon with orange spots." She grins at you. "I'm Kaylei, by the way, rider at Seascape Weyr. And this is my charming blue Iamarth." You blink at her and she laughs. "Yes, he's a blue. I think it must be, um, NOT unusual or something, because counting me, two girls have Impressed blues at Seascape! Well, you can come on in, I just remembered to light all the glowbaskets, so it's no so dark."

She ushers you--and Iamarth--into the weyr. You look around, and notice a table covered in hides. You look at it a bit longer, and Kaylei flushes. "Um, sorry, I keep putting a bunch of junk on that table. Most people put dirty dishes, I put old hides!" She sighs, exaggeratedly, as Iamarth plops down on a dragon couch. Kaylei wipes some of the hides and papers off the table and offers you a chair, just as a low whine comes from Iamarth.

I itch.

Kaylei sighs again, reaches for a jar, and you ask if Iamarth always talks to other people. "Hm? Well, yeah, I told you he thinks he's a canine. So he's super friendly." She makes a face as she rubs the blue, who croons in relief. You ask if she's going to be a seachrider or a threadfighter. "Well... I haven't made up my mind." She sighs yet again, and looks tired. She keeps stroking the blue, her hand covered in oil, and smiles at him. "Iamarth, my portable tub of itches." You both laugh, and Iamarth finally falls asleep. Kaylei stands and washes her hands off, then disappears for a bit. There's a bit of a shuffle, and then she comes back, holding two bubbly pies and a pitcher of klah. "Well, this is all the hospitality I have to offer." She pours you some klah and hands you a pie, taking the other for herself. You both eat awhile, until you finally ask about her. "Oh? Hm. Well, I was born at Talor Cliff Weyr, but transfered to Benden when I was still a weyrbrat. I never Impressed, though I stood as a candidate twice. We--well, my parents and I--went to Igen, but no luck there, either. Nor Southern, though I tried three times. My mother said if I didn't Impress from Seascape she was going to sell me to a circus." Kaylei squints her eyes, then laughs. "So I'm glad I Impressed Iamarth!"

"I guess there's nothing else to tell. I'm eighteen Turns, by the way." She smiles at you, and you both finish the bubbly pies in silence. She sets the leftovers down on the floor. "Cats," she explains, "love my weyr." She stands, and leads you to the door, waving goodbye. "I'll see you some other time, ahkay?"
