Shag Point

Produced by the Otago University Dive Club

Access: Shag Point is about a 50 km drive north of Dunedin along State Highway 1. There are several sites in this area where you can park your car and enter the water within 50 metres. The boat ramp is not a bad place to enter, but some of the better shore dives are found off the rocks below the picnic area (look for the water tank converted into a loo).
Weather / Sea conditions: Very exposed to the north, east and can be rough in southerly conditions. It is normally pretty good in southwest conditions.
Visibility: Between 2 - 15 metres, depending on the conditions. The sandy bottom stirs up fairly easily.
Description: Shag Point has fantastic areas of reef and some amazing kelp beds. Boat diving in this area is great with Fish Reef and Danger Reef being two popular local dive spots.
Depth: Between 14 - 18 metres, depending on distance from shore.
