JOHN JAMES PRITCHARD | The Boy and His Family |
As registration in England did not begin until 1834, the genealogist must rely on Church records and from there our jigsaw puzzle begins.
LINTON, HEREFORD
As there was a transcript available for this parish from 1570 to 1812, this was used, followed by Bishop transcripts from then until 1847.

This is undoubtedly our family. John (John James) is living there, having returned from the East Indies, and not yet married.
Ann, therefore, must be their mother and was possibly born about 1775. She is probably there helping to look after the children as William’s wife Sarah died in January 1841.
Five parishes in the area have been searched but no baptism of an Ann Pritchard was found for the period 1774-1776. Supposing, therefore, that Ann’s age in 1841 was 56 and this was heard or written wrongly as 66. This would make her birth 1784-1786. In Weston-under-Penyard there is an Ann baptized in 1785, daughter of John and Elizabeth. Her father, presumably, died in May 1794 and her mother in June 1803 when Ann was 18. Ann is then left alone and produces her first illegitimate child in 1805 when she is 20, a far more likely age than 30, if she was born in 1775. If this is so, then at least we can go back to the marriage of John Pritchard to Elizabeth Phillips in June 1768.
Ann’s son William married Sarah Taylor in February 1836 and William is shown in the census with his three children, the baptism of two of these being in the Linton register. The baptism of the third child is probably in the missing 1838-39 register. Then in March 1846 there is recorded the death of Mary Ann Pritchard, age 9.
The difference in the spelling of names is due to the fact that many people in those days were illiterate and it was left to the parish clerk or census recorder as to how the names were spelt.
You will note in the next chapter, a sister, Tamar, is listed as a next of kin. No record of a Tamar has been found in baptism records but in 1836 in Lydney, Gloucestershire a Tamar Pritchard married James Charles. Could there be a Tamar Pritchard or is her name really Sarah, base daughter of Ann, baptized in 1807. Another puzzle yet to be solved.
