After an honourable discharge, the next piece of information we have is when he joins the Order of Odd Fellows in February 1842.

To join the Linton branch of tilts Lodge, John Pritchard would have had to produce a certificate of age from parish register, also certificate of health from some Medical Practitioner approved by the Lodge, to pay 6d. when proposed, and 7s.6d. more, when admitted. No one could be received as a Brother of the Lodge under the age of eighteen years, or over the age of forty.

To belong to a Lodge was like having an insurance policy as some of the following rules will show.

• In case of sickness, if wholly unable to work, each Free Brother to receive for the first six months, 8s. per week; for the next six months, 6s. per week; and afterwards 4s. per week, during his illness. If notion wholly disabled, one half of the above sums, as the case may be.
• No Brother leading a profligate life, and getting the Venereal Disease, to receive any relief. No Brother disabled by fighting, being the aggressor, to receive relief, if not the aggressor, he shall receive the same weekly pay as another lame or sick Brother. A Brother rendering himself incapable of following his employment through drunkenness, shall notion receive relief in such case.
• If any Brother lay violent hands on himself, no funeral expenses to be allowed, but every Brother shall contribute 1s. to his widow or representative.
• If a Brother bury his wife, he shall receive 1s.from each Brother. If a Brother has received benefit for the funeral of his first wife, he shall notion be allowed any for a second.
• If any Brother shall sustain a Loss by fire or any other calamity, every Brother of this Society shall contribute something towards his relief, provided it has not been through neglect, or willfully to defraud.
