RTV Kosovo Starts
Programs in Serbian, Albanian and English in Pristina Soon
Except for Radio Pristina's newscasts, there is no program in Serbian in Kosovo and Metohija at this point. Serbia's state-run radio and TV station cannot reach their Kosovo audience since all transmitters have been downed.
On the Mobtel building in Pristina, the UNMIK has organized a setting up of an antenna for Radio & Television of Kosovo broadcasts starting as of September 19…
On the day the demilitarization deadline expires, the first two-hour experimental program will start in English, Albanian and Serbian, says the UNMIK decision on the establishment of Radio & Television of Kosovo. Openings competion is planned for tommorow. Former English, German or French speaking employees of RTV Pristina will be favored.
Also, as of September 19, the Pristina As TV station, financed by the Serbian government, will start airing a program in Albanian. Sokol Qus, who participated in Rambouillet negotiations, is the program's director and managing editor.

EBU to launch Radio Television Kosovo from Pristina on 19 September
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced it would launch a public service television station from Pristina on Sunday 19 September at the request of the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK).
Radio Television Kosovo (RTK) will broadcast in both Albanian and Serbo-Croat, initially for two hours a day during peak viewing hours (1900-2100 hours local time). Most of the airtime will be devoted to locally-produced news and information. The start-up date will ensure local TV coverage of the deadline for the demilitarization of the Kosovo Liberation Army. A reliable supply of impartial information is a key to peace and democracy,φ EBU Secretary-General Jean-Bernard Mnnch said in a statement. τThe mandate entrusted to the EBU by UNMIK is a recognition of the importance of genuine public service broadcasting, and we are pleased to take up this challenge in Kosovo.φ The EBU will give RTK free access to its Eurovision news exchanges, which carry more than 10,000 news items between EuropeΖs public service broadcasters every year. RTK will broadcast from a radio studio that survived the bombing in April of the former Radio and Television Pristina, which was previously dependent on the state television in Belgrade. Signals will be carried to viewers via the Hotbird satellite, as the terrestrial broadcasting network has been destroyed. Satellite dishes are widespread among the Kosovar population. RTLΖs interim Director General will be Richard Dill, formerly of GermanyΖs ARD.
The Editorial Director will be Christabel King, a UK freelance TV journalist due in Pristina today. Together with Operations Manager Patrick Morrison, also British, Dill and King are expected to run the daily service for nine months with a staff of between 55-60, about three quarters recruited locally. All engineering and technical staff should be in place by 12 September to begin installation and testing. The estimated cost of $3 million for the project is expected to be met by the United Nations and international donors. The EBU-led team will also be laying plans to transform RTK into a full and sustainable public service broadcaster, of radio as well as television, after the initial nine months.
Founded in 1950, the Geneva-based EBU serves 69 national broadcasters from 50 countries in the European broadcasting area, plus 49 associate members further afield. Its activities include the transmission of TV news on the Eurovision network, coordination of coproductions, technical research and standardisation, advice on media law, and the defence of public service broadcasting.
Dill was earlier involved in an EBU mission, still continuing, to help create genuine public service broadcasting in Bosnia-Herzegovina after the conflicts there following the break-up of Yugoslavia.
