THE CALLING OF SERVANT LEADERS

2 Tim 1:9

9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

 

Eph 4:1-4

1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, 2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; 3 Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

 

   THIS MORNING I WOULD LIKE TO FOLLOW UP ON ONE POINT THAT MITCH MADE IN HIS SERMON LAST WEEK ABOUT LEADERS.  IT IS MY FIRM BEIEF THAT GOD HAS CALLED EVERYONE OF US TO A POSITION OF LEADERSHIP AND INFLUENCE.  THE WORLD IS FILLED WITH FOLLOWERS, SUPERVISORS AND MANAGERS BUT FEW LEADERS.  LEADERSHIP IS LIKE BEAUTY, ITS HARD TO DEFINE BUT YOU KNOW IT WHEN YOU SEE IT.  TIME HAS PRODUCED A LEGACY OF DISTINGUISHED AND OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE INPACTED HISTORY AND THE ONGOING DEVELOPMENT OF MANKIND.  THESE INDIVIDUALS CONSISTED OF BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, RICH AND POOR, LEARNED AND UNLEARNED, TRAINED AND UNTRAINED.  THEY CAME FROM EVERY RACE, COLOR, LANGUAGE AND CULTURE IN THE WORLD.  MANY OF THEM HAD NO AMBITION TO BECOME GREAT OR RENOWNED.  IN FACT, MOST OF THESE INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE GREATLY AFFECTED MANKIND WERE SIMPLE PEOPLE WHO WERE VICTIMS OF THEIR CIRCUMSTANCES THAT DEMANDED THE HIDDEN QUALITIES OF THEIR CHARACTER TO TURN THINGS AROUND IN THEIR PASSIONATE QUEST FOR CHANGE OR REFORM.  ONE SUCH INDIVIDUAL THAT WE ARE GOING TO STUDY ABOUT THIS MORNING IS MOSES BUT BEFORE WE DO LET’S READ:

 

Rom 8:28-32

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. 31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?  

 

   ACCORDING TO OUR OPENING TEXT, GOD  HAS SAVED YOU AND CALLED WITH A HIGH CALLING.  THIS WORD HIGH SUGGESTS THAT YOU CALL IS IMPORTANT AND SIGNIFICANT TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE PURPOSES AND PLANS OF GOD.  SOME ONE ONCE SAID, YOU ARE WHAT YOU ARE BECAUSE OF WHY YOU ARE.  IN FACT THE DISCOVERY OF SELF IS THE BIRTH OF LEADERSHIP. GOD HAS CREATED EVERYONE OF US WITH A PERSONAL SENSE OF DESTINY AND PURPOSE.  EVERYTHING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU AT THIS POINT IN YOUR LIFE IS ACCORDING TO GOD’S DESIGN AND CALL UPON YOUR LIFE FOR SOME AREA OF  LEADERSHIP.  IF YOU ARE A PARENT THEN YOU ARE A LEADER OF CHILDREN, IF YOU HAVE JOB SENIORITY THEN YOU CAN BECOME A LEADER TO NEWLY HIRED PERSONEL.  IF YOU TEACH A SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS OR WORK IN THE NURSERY OR GREET PEOPLE AT THE DOOR THEN YOU HAVE THE POTENTIAL FOR LEADERSHIP.  IF YOU ARE FULFILLING THE GREAT COMMISSION AS AN AMBASSADOR FOR CHRIST THEN YOU WILL BE ABLE TO LEAD OTHERS TO CHRIST.  YOU SEE, LEADING SOMEONE TO A PERSONAL RELTIONSHP WITH JESUS CHRIST REQUIRES LEADERSHIP.

 

Prov 11:30

30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.

 

2 Cor 5:20

20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

 

   CHRISTIANITY TODAY IS VERY MUCH IN NEED OF SPIRITUAL LEADERS WHO CAN FULFILL THEIR CALL AS CHRIST’S AMBASSADORS.  HERE’S SOME ASTOUNDING STATISTICS FROM BARNA: (Notes from his book Today’s Pastors)

 

  60 percent of all Americans attend church at least once per month.
  12 percent of Americans read their Bible
  25 percent of church members admit they never pray
  23 percent never read their Bible
  60 percent never give to missions
  70 percent never assume responsibilities in the church
  85 percent never invite anyone to church
  95 percent never win anyone to Christ

   NOW LET ME GIVE YOU A SIMPLE DEFINITION OF LEADERSHIP.  LEADERSHIP IS THE CAPACITY TO INFLUENCE AND INSPIRE SOMEONE TO CHANGE AND MOVE TOWARDS A SPECIFIC GOAL.  LEADERSHIP IS THE CAPACITY TO RALLY, DIRECT, ENCOURAGE, MOTIVATE, INDUCE, MOVE, MOBILIZE AND ACTIVATE OTHERS TO PURSUE A COMMON GOAL OR PURPOSE WHILE MAINTAINING COMMITMENT, MOMENTUM, CONFIDENCE AND COURAGE.  LEADERSHIP IS THE ORGANIZING AND COORDINATING OF RESOURCES, ENERGIES AND RELATIONSHIPS IN A PRODUCTIVE WAY TO BRING ABOUT A COMMON GOAL FOR CHANGE OR REFORM. THE PUREST FORM OF LEADERSHIP IS INFLUENCE THROUGH INSPIRATION.  A LEADER IS ONE WHO DEVELOPS HIMSELF AND BY SO DOING INSPIRES OTHERS TO DO THE SAME. THE PURPOSE FOR LEADERSHIP IS TO INSPIRE EVERY FOLLOWER TO BECOME A LEADER AND FULFILL THEIR POTENTIAL

 

   ABRAHAM, MOSES, JOSHUA, ISAIAH, JEREMIAH, DANIEL, JOHN THE BAPTIST, THE APOSTLE PAUL, AND JESUS CHRIST WERE AMONG SOME OF THE MAJOR LEADERS RECORDED IN THE BIBLE.  IN FACT THERE WERE MANY LEADERS IN THE BIBLE THAT WE CAN LEARN FROM.  ONE SUCH LEADER WAS THE MAN MOSES.  LET’S BEGIN READING IN:

 

Acts 7:20-36

20 In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months: 21 And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son. 22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds. 23 And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.  24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian: 25 For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not. 26 And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another? 27 But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us? 28 Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday? 29 Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons. 30 And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the

Lord in a flame of fire in a bush. 31 When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him, 32 Saying,  I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the

God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold. 33 Then said the  Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground. 34 I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt. 35 This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush. 36 He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs

 in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

 

   MOSES WAS BORN A LEADER BUT HE HAD TO BECOME A LEADER THROUGH A PROCESS OF MANY YEARS OF BREAKING AND TRAINING.  YOU AND I ARE BORN TO BE A LEADER BUT WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO BECOME A LEADER THROUGH THE SAME KIND OF PROCESS THAT MOSES WENT THROUGH.  HOW MANY OF YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN BE BORN A MALE BUT YOU HAVE TO BECOME A MAN THROUGH A PROCESS WE CALL GROWING UP OR MATURITY.  WE ARE BORN A MALE BUT WE MUST GROW INTO MANHOOD THROUGH THE PROCESSES OF LIFE.  TO BECOME THE LEADER YOU WERE BORN TO BE, YOU MUST DISCOVER WHO YOU ARE, WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE AND YOU MUST UNDERSTAND AND ACCEPT GOD’S DESIGN FOR YOUR EXISTENCE.  THIS HAPPENED TO MOSES WHILE HE WAS STILL LIVING IN THE LUXURY OF THE PALACE.  LET’S LOOK IN VERSE:

 

23 And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

 

   THIS IS WHERE VISION AND PURPOSE IS BORN, “WHEN IT CAME INTO HIS HEART TO HELP HIS BROTHERS IN SLAVERY.”  ONE OF THE MAJOR INGREDIENTS OF ALL TRUE GODLY LEADERS IS PASSION.  THEY POSSESS A DEEP CONTROLLING DESIRE FOR CHANGE AND REFORM.  THE LEADER LOVES WHAT HE DOES AND LOVES DOING IT.  HIS WORK IS HIS LIFE.  IN FACT JESUS SAID, MY FOOD IS TO DO THE WILL OF MY FATHER.  YOU SEE, PASSION IS THE FUEL OF PURPOSE AND THE INSPIRATION OF LEADERSHIP.  WITHOUT PASSION VISION DIES.  WITHOUT PASSION A DREAM WILL DIE.  WITHOUT PASSION YOUR PURPOSE AND DESTINY WILL DIE UNFINISHED AND INCOMPLETE. BUT YOU SEE, MOSES HAD A PASSION TO HELP A NATION IN BONDAGE TO SLAVERY THAT SUSTAINED HIM THROUGH 40 YEARS OF PREPARATION.   LET’S LOOK AT HIS LIFE AS IT IS RECORDED IN THE BOOK OF ACTS.

   MOSES WAS CALLED TO BE A LEADER AND A DELIVERER, IN FACT HIS NAME MEANS TO DRAW OUT AND TO DELIVER.  WHAT HAPPENED WHEN GOD BIRTHED A DREAM, A VISION AND A PURPOSE IN MOSES’S HEART IS WHAT HAPPEN WITH MANY OF US.  GOD REVEALS TO US WHAT HE WANTS US TO DO AND THEN WE TRY TO IMPLEMENT IT IN OUR OWN STRENGTH AND WISDOM.  25 For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.  AN UNTRAINED, UNQUALIFIED AND UNPROCESSED LEADER WILL FUNCTION ON ASSUMPTION INSTEAD OF DIVINE DIRECTION.  YOU SEE, MOSES SUPPOSED THAT HIS FAMILY OF BROTHERS WOULD UNDERSTAND GOD’S CALL UPON HIS LIFE TO BE THEIR DELIVERER, BUT THEY DIDN’T.  YOU SEE, IT WASN’T IN GOD’S TIMING AND IT WASN’T DONE BY THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT BUT BY THE INSPIRATION AND WISDOM OF MAN. 

 

Isa 55:8-10

8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD.  9 "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways  and my thoughts than your thoughts.

 

Ps 103:6-8

6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed. 7 He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel. 8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

 

   NOW, AS WE LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER AT VERSE 25 WE SEE THE MAJOR ERROR OF MOSES’S PRESUMPTION: HE THOUGHT THAT GOD BY HIS HAND WOULD DELIVER THEM.  GOD NEVER DOES ANYTHING BY THE HAND OF MAN. 

 

Ex 20:24-25

24 An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee. 25 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.

 

THE WHOLE PURPOSE FOR OUR CHRISTIAN EXISTENCE IS TO RESTORE A RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD SO THAT WE CAN WORK TOGETHER WITH HIM TO FULFILL HIS PURPOSES AND PLANS IN THE EARTH.  THE KEY IS RELATIONSHIP, COMMUNICATION AND PARTNETSHIP WITH GOD.  MOSES THOUGHT HE COULD DO IT BY HIMSELF WITH THE TRAINING, EDUCATION AND UPBRINGING HE GOT FROM EGYPT.  YOU SEE, EGYPT HERE IS A TYPE OF THE WORLD AND ITS WISDOM AND STRENGTH AND GOD NEVER USES THE RESOURCES OF THIS WORLD TO ACCOMPLISH HIS PURPOSES AND PLANS.  MOSES NEEDED TO LEARN HOW TO DO THINGS  GOD’S WAY AND IN GOD’S TIME.  MOSES NEED TO BE PROCESSED FOR LEADERSHIP.  LET’S LOOK AT VERSE:

 

29 Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons. 30 And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

 

   I THINK ITS INTERESTING THAT THE WORD MIDIAN LIT. MEANS LAND OF CONTENTION.  MOSES WAS 40 YEARS ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE DESERT OF CONTENTION LEARNING THE WAYS OF GOD.  HE DIDN’T GO TO GOD’S SCHOOL OF HIGHER LEARNING BECAUSE THERE WASN’T ONE.  BUT HE DID ENTER GOD’S SCHOOL OF EVERY DAY LIVING IN RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.  HE HAD TO UNLEARN EVERYTHING THAT EGYPT HAD TAUGHT HIM.  WE CALL THAT BROKENESS: GOD HAD TO REDUCE HIM TO A PLACE WHERE HE SAW HIMSELF INCAPABLE OF BECOMING ISRAEL’S LEADER AND DELIVERER.  I CALL THIS THE PRINCIPLE OF JOHN THE BAPTIST WHEN HE SAID, I MUST DECREASE, AND CHRIST MUST INCREASE.  WHAT GOD DID FOR MOSES THROUGH  A PROCESS OF BROKENESS HE WILL DO FOR YOU SO THAT YOU CAN BECOME THE LEADER HE HAS DESIGNED FOR YOU LIFE.

 

EX. 3:11

11And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?

 

35 This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

 

   DO YOU SEE THE CHANGE OF DYNAMICS HERE IN THESE TWO VERSES.  WHEN GOD IS READY TO DO SOMETHING MAN USUALLY IS NOT READY.  GOD SAYS TO MOSES, COME NOW I WILL SEND YOU.  MOSES RESPONSE IS WHO AM I.  YOU SEE BEFORE HE THOUGHT HE WAS SOMEBODY BUT NOW AFTER 40 YEARS IN THE LAND OF CONTENTION HE BECAME A NOBODY.  I WANT YOU TO KNOW SOMETHING THIS MORNING, GOD USES NOBODIES TO ACCOMPLISH HIS WORK IN THE EARTH.  LOOK AT WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS:

 

1 Cor 1:26-31

26 Notice among yourselves, dear brothers, that few of you who follow Christ have big names or power or wealth. 27 Instead, God has deliberately chosen to use ideas the world considers foolish and of little worth in order to shame those people considered by the world as wise and great. 28 He has chosen a plan despised by the world, counted as nothing at all, and used

it to bring down to nothing those the world considers great, 29 so that no one anywhere can ever brag in the presence of God. 30 For it is from God alone that you have your life through Christ Jesus. He showed us God's plan of salvation; he was the one who made us acceptable to God; he made us pure and holy and gave himself to purchase our salvation. 31 As it says in the Scriptures, "If anyone is going to boast, let him boast only of what the Lord has done."

 

   HERE WE ARE BACK AT GOD’S CALLING FOR LEADERS.  HIS CRITERIA IS DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF THE WORLDS.  HE’S NOT NECESSARILY LOOKING FOR THE WELL EDUCATED, THE FLAMBOYANT, THE CHARISMATIC, OR THE STRONG INDEPENDENT TYPE.  ON THE CONTRARY HE’S LOOKING FOR NORMAL, EVERYDAY FOLK LIKE YOU AND ME.  HE’S LOOKING FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT OVER-CONFIDENT OR SELF-RELIANT BUT PEOPLE WHO ARE TOTALLY DEPENDENT ON GOD FOR THEIR STRENGTH AND WISDOM.  HE’S LOOKING FOR SIMPLE PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND ME WHO CAN WALK BY FAITH AND TRUST IN GOD’S PROVISION FOR OUR LIVES, OUR CAREERS AND HIS CALL UPON OUR LIVES TO BE HIS LEADERS AND DELIVERERS.

 

2 Cor 3:4-6

4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: 5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

 

1 Pet 4:11

11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

 

   AGAIN, LET ME REIETERATE, THE KEY WORD IS RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD BY FAITH IN CHRIST JESUS.  WE MUST LEARN TO LEAN ON GOD AND TRUST HIM AT ALL TIMES.  WE HAVE ENTERED INTO PARTNERSHIP WITH GOD AND WE MUST LEARN WHAT OUR ROLE IS IN THAT PARTNERSHIP.  HERE IS A KEY VERSE THAT WILL HELP US UNDERSTAND THIS CONCEPT:

 

Rom 8:26

26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

 

HELPS: 4878  sunantilambanomai (soon-an-tee-lam-ban'-om-ahee; from 4862 and 482; to take hold of opposite together, i.e. co-operate (assist): KJV-- help.  Instead of and in cooperation with.

 

WHAT PAUL IS SAYING HERE IN REGARDS TO PRAYER HE IS SAYING IN REGARDS TO ANY SPIRITUAL WORK THAT GOD HAS CALLED US TO DO.  THE SPIRIT WILL HELP OUR INFIRMITIES OR WEAKNESSES AND COME ALONG SIDE OF US TO ASSIST US IN THE WISDOM, UNDERSTANDING AND STRENGTH TO FUFLFILL HIS CALL AND PURPOSE FOR OUR LIVES.  GOD WILL NEVER ASK YOU TO DO SOMETHING THAT HE DOES NOT HELP YOU TO ACCOMPLISH.  GOD DOESN’T NEED YOU ABILITY, HE NEED YOUR AVAILABLITY.  IS THERE ANYONE HERE THIS MORNING THAT IS AVAILABLE TO BE GOD’S LEADERS?  AMEN!  I SURE HOPE SO!  NOW LET’S LOOK AT GOD’S STYLE OF LEADERSHIP BECAUSE IT IS DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF THE WORLD.

 

Matt 20:20-28

20 Then the mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee, brought them to Jesus and respectfully asked a favor. 21 "What is your request?" he asked. She replied, "In your Kingdom, will you let my two sons sit on two thrones next to yours?"

22 But Jesus told her, "You don't know what you are asking!" Then he turned to James and John and asked them, "Are you able to drink from the terrible cup I am about to drink from?" "Yes," they replied, "we are able!" 23 "You shall indeed drink from it," he told them. "But I have no right to say who will sit on the thrones next to mine. Those places are reserved for the persons my Father selects." 24 The other ten disciples were indignant when they heard what James and John had asked for.

25 But Jesus called them together and said, "Among the heathen, kings are tyrants and each minor official lords it over those beneath him. 26 But among you it is quite different. Anyone wanting to be a leader among you must be your servant.

27 And if you want to be right at the top, you must serve like a slave. 28 Your attitude must be like my own, for I, the Messiah, did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for many."

 

   THE WORLD’S STYLE OF LEADERSHIP CALLS FOR THE STRONG, CHARAISMATIC, OUTGOING, INDEPENDENT, SELF PROMOTING INDIVIDUAL.  GOD’S STYLE OF LEADERSHIP IS DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSITE.  GOD’S STYLE OF LEADERSHIP CALLS FOR UNSELFISH SERVICE TO OTHERS.  JESUS SAID, IF YOU WANT TO BE GREAT IN GOD’S KINGDOM THEN LEARN TO BE THE SERVANT OF ALL.  NEXT WEEK WE WILL LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER AT WHAT JESUS HAD IN MIND WHEN WE LOOK AT THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT OF A SERVANT IN BIBLE TIMES.  LET IT SUFFICE TO SAY THAT THE WORLD’S STANDARD OF LEADERS IS AN OFFENSE TO THE WAYS AND METHODS OF GOD.  GOD USES THE WEAK AND NOT THE STONG.  GOD USES THE POOR AND NOT THE RICH.  GOD USES THE UNIMPORTANT AND NOT THE IMPORTANT.  DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU COULD PERHAPS QUALIFY TO BECOME ONE OF GOD’S LEADERS THIS MORNING.  I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT IF YOU ARE SAVED THEN YOU ARE CALLED TO BECOME A LEADER IN ONE CAPACITY OR ANOTHER.  SO LET’S DETERMINE TO BECOME THE LEADER GOD WANTS YOU TO BECOME AT HOME, AT WORK AND RIGHT HERE IN CHURCH.
