Warriors Win A School Record 9 Games
2nd Place Finish In League Play

The 1939-40 Warriors proved to be the most successful team in school history with a 6-2 league record, good enough for a 2nd place finish behind perennial
league champion Maricopa. The Warriors also established a single season record for the most wins earning nine victories.

An early season highlight was winning the championship of the Lancaster Tournament by defeating both Victorville and host Antelope Valley.
J. R. Warner earned a gold basketball and a medal for his outstanding play in the tournament.

Another highlight was an early January trip to Los Angeles to play the USC freshmen team as the preliminary game to the USC-UCLA varsity game. While Tehachapi lost, 10-47, it was a
rewarding experience for the young Warrior team. The contest was arranged by Warrior coach Joe Kelly, an alumnus of USC and a former star player for the Trojans.

Also of historical significance, the Taft High School varsity Wildcats visited Tehachapi for the first time on February 10, and proceeded to whip the Warriors, 26 to 12.

Jesus Castro proved to be the team star by being selected to the All-Sierra League 1st team and the All-County Honorable Mention team.
John Valdez was also selected to the All-Sierra League 1st team.
