Warriors Capture First South Sierra League Title!
Best Season In School History

Under coach John Goodell, the Tehachapi Warriors captured their first South Sierra League title by going a perfect 6-0 in league play.
The 1945-46 Warriors had the best basketball
season in school history by posting an overall record of 19 wins and 2 losses (including exhibition games).

Spoiling a storybook season, Tehachapi dropped a heartbreaking one point loss in the Sierra Division valley championship game
to Dos Palos, 32-31. Center Fred Castro paced the Warriors with 13 points in a game played before 500 screaming fans in Tehachapi.
Castro, a sophomore, netted a long basket as the game ended, but the shot was ruled no good
as the game clock had expired by a mere second.

Of historical significance, the new Tehachapi gym opened up to rave reviews on January 11, 1946. It had been nearly two years
since the old gymnasium had burned to the ground in a mysterious fire.
The opening of the new gym featured plenty of fanfare, games, music, and dancing.

Other season milestones included two defeats over rival Maricopa, the first time a Warrior team had ever beaten the varsity Indians.
Also, Tehachapi defeated Barstow twice, quite an accomplishment since the Riffians were the Desert League champions.

The Warriors concluded their season by participating in the eight team Barstow Invitational basketball tournament.
Tehachapi dominated play by defeating St. Bernadine, Victorville, and Needles in the championship game.
Fred Castro was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament and Jesse Peters joined him on the all-tournament team.
