1960-61 Warriors

The 1960-61 Warriors include, left to right, Leroy Ary, Steve Kromer, Louis Villacana, Dennis Jennings, Jim Kirkendoll,
Bill Mabery, Stan Beckham, Doug Bingham, and kneeling manager Billy Ary. The 1960-61 Warriors were coached by Chuck Ferrari.
Expectations were high for the 1960-61 Warriors with seven letterman returning from the 1959-60 team that won a school record 16 games and advanced deep into the CIF 1A playoffs. Opposing DIL coaches predicted the Warriors would win the DIL in 1961. However, a number of factors turned a promising season into a living nightmare. Injuries and Disciplinary Issues Plague 1961 Team
First, a very successful Warrior football team played an extended season due to the playoffs, meaning a number of players got a late start for the basketball season.
Several early December basketball games were also canceled.
Secondly, junior center Jim Waters (6'3"), the leading scorer and rebounder from the 1959-60 team, was lost for the season due to an injury he suffered the second game of the season.
And finally, a number of players were lost both early in the season and later in the season due to scholastic and disciplinary reasons. A number of junior varsity players were brought up to the varsity team to complete the season. The end result was a three win season --- the worst season since the Warrior teams of the mid-1940's (World War II era).
In league play, the Warriors three wins were over Lone Pine and Kern Valley twice. Trona won the league championship with a final 11-1 record; Bishop and Desert tied for 2nd place at 9-3.
Guard Leroy Ary played the entire season and scored a team high 72 points in 12 league games. No Warriors were selected to the All-DIL team.
