1965-66 Warriors
League Record: 9-4 (12-10 Overall)
The 1965-66 Warriors include, left to right, front row (kneeling) Wayne Hackett, John Bradley, Tom Powell, Armando Capetillo, Jim Herrera, Jim Blair, Lyle Stevens,
back row (standing) Jack Iriart, Ben Palmer, Tim Sanders, Bob Cote, Jerry Gassaway, Gilbert Parks, and Dan Jackson.
Under third year coach Vic McElroy, the Warriors finished in 3rd place in DIL play with a final 9-4 record. Throughout the season, Tehachapi was led by juniors Tim Sanders (6'4") and Bob Cote (6'3"). The tall pivot men were joined by guards Wayne Hackett, Armando Capetillo, and forwards Lyle Stevens and Ben Palmer. Warriors Finish 3rd In DIL Play
Sanders Garners MVP and All-DIL 1st Team Honors
In the pre-league season, the Warriors participated in three tournaments. In the 1st Annual Tehachapi Tournament, the Warriors finished 1-1, losing to Quartz Hill and defeating Rosamond. Sanders was selected to the All-Tournament team. Lone Pine won the inaugural tournament.
In the annual Kern County Tournament in Bakersfield, the Warriors were knocked out early dropping games to both McFarland and Kern Valley. The Warriors also had a tough time in the annual Desert Tournament, winning 1 and losing 2. Sanders was again selected to the All-Tournament team at Edwards AFB scoring 45 points in three games against Trona, Boron, and Big Bear.
In league play, the Warriors had a strong season but lost twice to eventual league champion Bishop. Tehachapi also lost games to Lone Pine and Trona. Sanders scored 250 points in league competition averaging 16.1 points per game; Cote added 166 points for a 12.9 game average. Cote also led the team in rebounding.
Sanders was selected as the team Most Valuable Player and also earned 1st team All-DIL honors. Cote was selected on the All-DIL Honorable Mention team.
