Under second year coach Frank Crumpacker, the 1980-81 Warriors finished in third place in the Desert-Inyo League (DIL) large school division with a 6-4 record. Bishop High School (10-0) won the DIL large division championship, their tenth straight DIL title.

For Tehachapi, the 1980-81 season was the ninth time in ten years the Warriors finished with a winning season record. Tehachapi finished at 12-10 for the season. Throughout the season, the Warriors were led by the front line of 6'8 Kirk Anderson and 6'5 Hal Barker; and ball handlers Scott Hiebert and Mike Gleason.

One highlight in the pre-season was a 3rd place finish in the annual Kern County Tournmanent in Bakersfield. In the tournament, the Warriors defeated Maricopa by 2 points; lost a heartbreaker to Wasco by 1 point; and then nipped Shafter by 2 points for the 3rd place trophy. Gleason was named to the all-tourney team, scoring 38 points in the tourney.

The 3rd place finish in the DIL (6-4) qualified the Warriors for the post-season playoffs. In the first round, Tehachapi defeated Flintridge Prep, 69-53, behind the 20 point effort of Gleason.

The Warrior season came to an abrupt end in Carpineria though, as the coastal Warriors crushed Tehachapi, 102-64.

For their outstanding play throughout the season, seniors Barker and Gleason were named the co-MVP's of the team by the Warrior coaching staff. Gleason led the team in scoring with just over 260 points for the season, averaging nearly 12 point per game. Gleason also earned all-DIL 1st team honors while Barker was named to the Honorable Mention team.
