Warriors Capture DIL Title in 1988
Mark Ratekin Earns All-DIL 1st Team Honors

Under second year coach Steve Walker, the 1987-88 Warriors captured a Desert Inyo League large schools division title. For Tehachapi, it was the schools second DIL title in three years.

In pre-league play, the Warriors were 5-5, starting slow because the Warrior football team went deep into the post-season CIF playoffs.

One highlight in the pre-league season was a 2nd place finish in the annual Bishop High School Tournament, which featured a lineup of eight schools. In the tournament, the Warriors defeated Capistrano Valley Christian; outscored Bell Air Prep; and lost to Pasadena Poly in the finals, 61-60. All-tournament selections for the Warriors included Mark Ratekin (49 points in 3 games) and Lance Christensen (30 points in 3 games).

In league play, the Warriors blew away the competition with a final 9-1 league record. The toughest wins were against Bishop, with Tehachapi winning the home game by 8 points and the away game by 2 points. The lone loss was against Kern Valley, 55-54.

In CIF post-season play, Tehachapi defeated Santa Ynez High School in a thrilling overtime game, 73-70. Ratekin entertained the home town crowd with a season high 30 point game.

The season came to an end the following week though, as a talented Beaumont team whipped Tehachapi, 54-37. Steve Hunt had 13 to lead Tehachapi.

Ratekin and Hunt were the leading scorers for the Warriors, with both players going over the 200 point mark for the season. The leading rebounders were forward Chris Raymond and 6'6" center Troy Damian.

For his outstanding play throughout the season, senior Mark Ratekin was selected to the All-DIL 1st team. Earning 2nd team honors were Damian and Raymond.
