John Goodell, a graduate of Fresno State University, became a coaching legend at Tehachapi High School. Goodell laid down a foundation based on mental and physical toughness, discipline and preparation while generating "Warrior Pride" which is still present to this day.
What Goodell accomplished may be overlooked in the modern era, but in the 1930's and 1940's, Tehachapi was trying to define itself as a community. The winning teams of the late 1940's and early 1950's gave the community tremendous pride --- and in some ways, put Tehachapi on the map. In his 11 years as a coach, he led the Warriors to a 64-27-5 record and a .690+ winning percentage. His teams won 5 straight Sierra League Championships, and 2 San Joaquin Valley Championships. He also coached many successful basketball and track teams at Tehachapi High. The Bakersfield Californian recognized him for his overall coaching and teaching efforts by naming him the "Man of the Year" in 1951.
Goodell left Tehachapi after the 1955-56 school year to accept a position with Dinuba High School.
