Warrior Football Schedule
The Tehachapi High School Athletic Department recently finalized the 2014 Warrior football schedule. The new schedule will have quite
a few new twists and turns from the schedule in 2013.
First and foremost, the Warriors are moving into the new South Yosemite League (SYL) after leaving the Southeast Yosemite League (SEYL) after a brief two year membership. Coming into the SYL with Tehachapi is former SEYL member East Bakersfield. The other schools in the SYL include Independence, Golden Valley, Ridgeview, and West Bakersfield.
The pre-league schedule also looks different as the Warriors open up the season on the mountain with Foothill-Bakersfield on August 29. Tehachapi defeated Foothill last season as both schools were members of the SEYL. The Warriors hold a commanding 9-1 lead in the overall series.
In Week 2, the Warriors will be on the road against Burroughs High School from Ridgecrest. Tehachapi leads the overall series against the Burros, a member of the Desert Sky Conference, 14 to 8. In 2013, the Burros finished 4-1 in league play; 5-6 overall including a first round post-season playoff loss.
The Warriors will also travel in Week 3 to Bakersfield to battle the Centennial Golden Hawks. The Hawks lead the overall series, 2-0, defeating Tehachapi in back-to-back years in 1994 and 1995. The Division I power Hawks were 5-6 overall; 2-3 in league play in 2013.
In Week 4, the Warriors continue their long time series with former South Sequoia League (SSL) opponent Arvin. Tehachapi leads the series, 19-4, defeating Arvin in 2013, 51-7, in Arvin. Arvin was 4-6 in 2013; 2-4 in SSL play.
After a "bye" week, the Warriors play their final non-league game at home on October 3 against North Bakersfield. The Warriors lead the overall series 6-1, defeating North twice in 2013, 42-7 in Bakersfield, and 33-7 in a playoff game. North finished the 2013 season at 4-7; 3-2 in SEYL play.
The 2014 schedule features a 10 game season format, with five pre-season games and five South Yosemite League games; including a bonus six home games on the schedule.
Noticeably absent from the 2014 schedule is Garces --- who is being moved up to an all Division I power league --- the all-Bakersfield Southwest Yosemite League. The annual Ogilvie Bowl will be put on hiatus for the immediate future.
The dean of Kern County coaches, Steve Denman, will return for his 33rd season as the head coach of the Warrior program. Denman has amassed a career 282-104-4 coaching record enroute to 14 league championships, 6 CIF runner-up finishes, and 7 CIF championships.
