They say the only thing harder than winning a championship is defending the championship.

If you believe in that line of thought, then you have to tip your hat to a Lady Warriors basketball team that has won the title five consecutive years from 2003-2004 to 2007-2008.

Amazingly, over a five-year span, Tehachapi has recorded a 46-4 South Sequoia League record and five-straight 20-win seasons, a feat unmatched since Tehachapi joined the league in 1992.

The five-peat was reached when the Lady Warriors defeated Arvin (43-35) and Wasco (54-30) this past week.

Ashley Asoau led the victory over the Bears with 14 points and six rebounds; followed by Jana Smith with nine points, 13 rebounds and two blocked shots; and Scarlett Dunn with eight points, four assists and four rebounds.

Against Wasco, Smith had 20 points in the contest, followed by scoring from Asoau (12 points), Persephonie Devereaux (six points), Kristen Baquerizo (five points), Celina Torres (three points), and Lisa Gaeta, Brittini Paz, Donna Crowley and Anita Pimentel with two points each.

Tehachapi (20-7; 9-1 SSL) has garnered the No. 3 seed in the Division III Central Section playoffs this week and will take on the No. 6 seeded Kingsburg Vikings (17-9; 7-3 CSL) this Friday at home. Game will start at 7 p.m.
