Another banner year for Mountain Athletics!
It’s official folks, for the second straight year…Tehachapi has amassed the most league championships of any SSL team in 2007-2008! Congratulations to the players, parents, and coaches on their outstanding seasons!
Sports taking league championships this season include: Boys Varsity Football, Boys Freshmen Football, Girls Junior Varsity Cross Country, Boys Junior Varsity Cross Country, Boys Junior Varsity Tennis, Girls Junior Varsity Tennis, Boys Junior Varsity Basketball, Girls Varsity Basketball, Girls Junior Varsity Basketball, Boys Varsity Wrestling, Boys Junior Varsity Wrestling, Girls Varsity Soccer, Girls Junior Varsity Soccer, Girls Junior Varsity Softball, and Girls Varsity Swimming.
In the spring, a special congratulations goes to the varsity boys swim squad, who took first out of every sequoia/sierra team (sixth overall) at the Division I Valley championships in Clovis, and the boys baseball team for re-writing the record books on their 30-29 win over Bakersfield Christian earlier this season! The 59-run game is the most runs ever in one game of high school baseball in California. The junior varsity boys tennis team also won the school’s first-ever SSL title in boys tennis, going undefeated on the year and sweeping the individual championships with gold and silver in singles and gold in doubles.
Rounding out the great accomplishments include the varsity girl’s softball team and varsity boy’s tennis team, who both made it to the CIF section semi’s. Great job this year everyone!
Special Recognition to All-Area Warriors
In addition to garnering all-league honors, Tehachapi High athletes received recognition for the Bakersfield Californian’s All-Area board. Grabbing the top honors were Michael Halaska, who was selected as Kern County’s swimmer of the year for the SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, and third time on the All-Area first team! Congratulations Michael! Also taking coach of the year honors was swimming coach Joey Neptune, who helped guide Tehachapi to a sixth place showing at the CIF finals. Neptune is the second coach this season to get coach of the year, and fourth coach the last two years (Tom Franchere – Soccer, Chris Olofson – Basketball, Tony Keller – Wrestling)
Also honored were second team athletes Kelsey Kapitzke (softball), Wesley Schultz (swimming), Tyler Thoms (tennis), and honorable mention selections Sean Arbaut (baseball), John Roemer (track and field), Jacob Booth (golf), and Dylan Patton (swimming).
