Ridgeview Wolf Pack Coming to the Mountain
The 2008 Warrior varsity football team advanced to the CIF Central Section Division III playoffs Friday night after defeating a scrappy Arvin Bear team, 24-18. The Warriors finished the regular season at 6-4, 4-1 in SSL play to earn a 2nd place finish.
Bakersfield Christian (9-1), behind the throwing arm of quarterback Derek Carr, put the finishing touches on storybook season by topping Taft, 35-14, for an outright SSL league championship.
The Warriors earned a #6 seeding in the playoffs and will play host to #11 seed Ridgeview of Bakersfield. Ridgeview finished the season with a 2-8 season record and were members of the large school Southwest Yosemite League. The winner will meet #3 seed Golden Valley in Bakersfield who earned a first round bye.
The Warriors and Wolf Pack had one common opponent in 2008: Frontier High. Tehachapi lost to Frontier 18-19, as did the Wolf Pack, 20-21. The Wolf Pack earned a quality win earlier in the season by upsetting Stockdale, 30-15. Stockdale finished the regular season at 8-2 and earned a championship in the tough Southwest Yosemite League.
There are 11 teams in the Division III tournament, and the Warriors would have to win four straight games to defend their CIF championship from a year ago. On the other side of the bracket is the #1 seed Hanford Bullpups (9-1).
In Division IV, SSL foe Taft (7-3) earned a #5 seed and will travel to #4 Kingsburg, and #8 Arvin (4-6) will host #9 Selma. CVC of Visalia (8-2) is the #1 seed in Division IV.
In Division V, SSL champion Bakersfield Christian was given a #2 seed and a first round bye. The Eagles will play the winner of the Lindsay-Parlier game. Undefeated Corcoran (10-0) earned the #1 seed.
