TEHACHAPI - For a quarter, it looked as if an upset was brewing on the mountain and Tehachapi was poised to make an early exit from the playoffs.
After fumbling the opening kickoff, Ridgeview marched down the field 23 yards on two separate drives, capping both offensive possessions with a pair Tyler Dogins touchdown runs.
“It was a physical ballgame. A real dogfight early on,” said Tehachapi head coach Steve Denman. “(Ridgeview) had momentum and fortunately we were able to stay close and get back in it.”
Stymied in the running game, Tehachapi was forced to open up their playbook in the second quarter with the pass, with Kurtis Knudson finding a wide-open Josh Strauss in the flat for a 39-yard touchdown strike.
Tehachapi continued their momentum after the break, with Knudson taking a quarterback option down the left sideline for a score and Adam Mullen breaking through for a 83-yard touchdown jaunt to give the Warriors their first lead of the night.
On Ridgeview's ensuing possession, an errant shotgun snap led to a Garrett Coontz fumble recovery inside the Wolfpack five-yard line. Three plays later, Tehachapi put the final nail in the coffin with a Derek Lange goal line leap in the endzone.
“We had some turnovers that gave us a short field,” added Denman. “Mullen was also able to pop that long run and our defense improved. It was a good test for us and we’re happy to get the win.”
Mullen was the leading rusher for Tehachapi with 138 yards on 16 carries. Donte Malloy led Ridgeview with 104 total yards of offense.
