1930 Warriors (Indians) Launch
Mountain Football Program

In it's third year as a high school, Tehachapi initiated a football program under the guidance of coach Gus Offerman. With a high school enrollment of approximately 30 students (9th through 12th grade), Tehachapi enjoyed the distinction of being the smallest school in the State of California playing football. The squad consisted of 14 players, nearly every boy in school, averaging 129 pounds per man! After the season began, 3 more boys joined the team. The Warriors (referred to as the Indians or Redskins in 1930) fought hard in every game --- but did not win.

The season began on October 18 against Shafter High, three weeks later than originally planned, because the hometown field was not yet completed and all of the football equipment had not yet been secured. With just one week of practice under their belts, the Warriors lost their season opener at home against Shafter, 32-0.

In Week 2, the Tehachapi team traveled to Bakersfield to meet the Bakersfield High Lightweights (aka the junior varsity Sandabs), and were crushed 68-0 at historic Griffith Field. Some local accounts of the game incorrectly listed the score as 58-0, namely the high school yearbook. The score is significant in the sense it stands as the worst defeat in Warrior history (through the 2011 season).

Of interest on the 1930 schedule was the overnight weekend road trip of November 7 & 8. On Friday night, the Indians played Bishop, and on Saturday afternoon, the team played Lone Pine! It was a tough weekend for the Warriors, as they scored a combined one touchdown in both games and gave up 72 points!

Throughout the season the Warriors were led by quarterback Bill Downs, halfback Jose Narez, end Zip Castillo, and linemen Bob McDaniel, and Joe Errea.
