Selma Bears at Tehachapi

Friday, November 14, 2003

Senior Warrior running back Tanner Hutchinson established two new Warrior records against Selma. His 6 TD's in a single game broke the school record of 5 TD's previously held by Wilbur Griffin (1942) and Dustin McBride (2000). Tanner has now scored 46 TD's in his two years as a varsity running back, shattering the old mark of 45 TD's in a varsity career set by Eric Young (1989-90). (thswarriors.com file photo)

Tehachapi Runs Past Selma, 55-22

By RYAN SCHUSTER, Bakersfield Californian staff writer, posted November 15, 2003

TEHACHAPI -- It was over almost before it even began.

Tehachapi High scored touchdowns on five of six first-half possessions as the Warriors cruised to a 55-22 first round Central Section Sequoia Division Large School playoff victory over Selma on Friday night.

Senior Tanner Hutchinson rushed for 266 yards and six touchdowns on 16 carries to pace fourth-seeded Tehachapi (8-3).

"This game was great," Hutchinson said. "I think that's every back's dream -- scoring pretty much every time you touch the ball. I have to thank my linemen for their blocking. There were holes everywhere."

Hutchinson scored on TD runs of 8, 45, 5, 56 and 5 yards to stake Tehachapi to a commanding 35-8 halftime lead.

Then for good measure he added a 59-yard TD dash on his only second-half carry and joined his teammates cheering on the reserves, who were subbed in midway through the third quarter.

Tehachapi, which has won six straight, plays at Washington Union in Friday's semifinal.

"At this point we're just happy to be in the playoffs," Tehachapi coach Steve Denman said. "We'll play whoever."

No. 5 seed Selma (5-6) looked overmatched from the start, totalling just three yards, a lost fumble and two punts -- one of them blocked -- in its first three drives of the game.

Selma played the game without starting quarterback Steven Stalie, who was injured last week, starting wide receiver Brison Pedersen and starting running back Sherman Moon, who sat out the first half and had just two carries.

"We held onto the ball and played defense," Denman said. "We're just real happy with our play on both sides of the ball."

Tehachapi scored on its first three possessions and led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Selma finally got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter when a diving Gabriel Moran caught a 12-yard TD pass from quarterback Alex Calderon on fourth down in the left corner of the end zone. Chris Vasquez scored on a two-point run to pull Selma within 21-8 with five minutes left in the second quarter.

It took Hutchinson and Tehachapi just one play to answer.

Hutchinson returned the ensuing kickoff 30 yards to the Tehachapi 44. On the Warriors' first offensive play, Hutchinson cut to the outside, ran down the right sideline, stiff arming the final defender on a 56-yard TD scamper. That score put Tehachapi up 28-8 after a Kris Haycock extra point with 4:49 to play.

Tehachapi took a 35-8 halftime lead when Hutchinson scored on a 5-yard run up the middle on third and goal with three seconds left and Haycock added the extra point.

The Warriors methodically drove 80 yards in seven plays, taking just more than a minute off the clock following a Selma turnover on downs at the Tehachapi 20 with 1:17 remaining.

The game was perhaps the team's final home game of the season.

"I'm just glad we came out with a win in the final game we're going to play on this field," Hutchinson said. "There were a lot of memories."
