The Generals got a good look at Gary Evans Friday. They saw him coming and going as twice he slipped through the Shafter defense and scored on kickoff returns of 74 and 65 yards as the Warriors easily defeated the Generals, 40-15.
The Tehachapi High School varsity football team was up for homecoming and weren't about to let the Generals spoil the celebration. The Warriors scored six times and rushed for 446 yards in front of a huge crowd at Coy Burnett Field while holding the Generals to just 98 yards on the ground and 119 yards passing.
Evans, who set the tone of the evening on the opening kickoff of the game with a 74 yard TD, sent a chill through the already frosty Shafter sidelines. After the Generals successfully kicked a field goal at the start of the second quarter, Evans proved his first TD wasn't a fluke when he ran back the ensuing kickoff for 65 yards to put the Warriors ahead 13-3.
The Warriors Richard Munoz and Dustin McBride got in the act as they added TD's later in the first half to lead 27-3 at the break.
Munoz' TD, a 32 yard pass from QB Jerad Romo, came with 3:22 remaining in the 2nd quarter. Romo and Munoz connected again in the waning seconds of the half on a 39 yard pass that set up McBride's first of three TD's from the one-yard line.
Warrior senior Dustin McBride kept his stronghold as the leading scorer in the county by scoring another two TD's in the second half to finish even with a total of 160 yards rushing. In the second half, McBride had TD runs of 54 and 3 yards. Warrior place kicker Jake Steele hit two of five PAT's.
Tehachapi shut down the Generals big play threat with solid defense that kept Shafter ball carriers out of the end zone for the entire first half. Shafter got close to the THS end zone, reaching the 25 and 13 on their first two possessions before the Warriors slammed the door.
Gary Evans was credited with a fumble recovery in the first quarter but the Warriors' only turnover of the game came three plays later to end the drive and give Shafter good field position, which resulted in a field goal in the second quarter.
The Generals scored once each in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Both PAT attempts failed. Isac Hernanadez blistered across the line of scrimmage to block the Generals' first PAT kick. The second was wide of the uprights. Hernandez was in on five other key tackles to aide the THS defense. Darren Tripp had a great game with 7 tackles including a key third down sack in the second quarter to force a punt. The Warriors scored four plays later. James Harris finished the game with a sack and 6 tackles.
