With 41-12 Win Over Shafter
SHAFTER - In a battle between two long time rivals, the Tehachapi Warriors opened league play by defeating the Shafter Generals, 41-12. In other SSL action, Taft came back to top Wasco, 44-28, and Bakersfield Christian held on to defeat Arvin, 30 to 20.
The Warrior victory sets up a showdown next Friday night in Tehachapi against the undefeated Taft Wildcats. The winner of this game will probably have the inside track towards the 2007 SSL title.
Against Shafter, the Warriors led throughout the game leading 14-0 after the 1st quarter; 35-6 at halftime; and 35-12 after three quarters. Warrior running back Will Clark scored on a touchdown run with 7:35 remaining in the game to close out the scoring.
The Warriors scored on their first four offensive possessions to put the game out of reach early in the contest. Kelly Lorenz and Josh Strauss both scored on short run plays in the first quarter, and Ehren Ochsenrider connected with Adam Mullen on a 48 yard touchdown at the 4:29 mark in the 2nd quarter.
On the Generals next possession, Nick Ballengee out quicked the Warrior defenders with a 70-yard touchdown run down the sideline for Shafter's only 1st half TD. The Warriors came right back with two more scores, one on a Josh Strauss 12-yard run and then on a shifty 32-yard interception return by Mullen.
This was the 43rd meeting between the two schools, with the series now tied at 21-21 with one tie.
